Inherit the Wind, With Classroom Debate

Tennessee Law Promotes Debate Over Evolution and Other Theories

Unlike the law used to try John Scopes, a biology teacher who flouted the state's ban on evolution nearly 90 years ago, the current bill does not require teaching any view of creation.

Instead, it encourages students to question accepted scientific theories -- listing as examples evolution, the chemical origins of life, global warming and cloning -- and it protects teachers from punishment if they teach creationism. Proponents say it will encourage critical thinking and give teachers license to discuss holes in scientific theories if they choose to do so.

Perhaps a good thing if teachers can handle the socio-political ramifications. I wonder if teachers will encourage debate over "flat Earth" theories or Earth-centric universes.

I suppose that it also implies that students should be encouraged to raise critical theological questions in Humanities classes and discuss atheism as an alternative to theism.

This is drivvle. If teachers are teaching science classes properly they are already questioning accepted scientific theories while instructing students on the scientific method. Questioning established wisdom is the foundation of the scientific method. This is simply another attempt by the flat earthers to shovel their **** in the classroom.

The interesting element of the law is the protection of teachers that teach Creationism in science class. Well, is there protection for teaching different flavors of Creationism, such as the First Nations version, the native Hawaiian version, the ancient Greek version?

I was hoping for more classroom time for the Mayan theories, especially this year.

Are you saying the earth is not flat?? & the earth is not at the center of the universe??
Next you will be telling us that the earth was not made in 6 days with a rest on the 7th & that we are descended from monkeys !!!
There are some strange people with some wacky ideas about !!
