Janet Napolitano appointed UC President

Regents approve Napolitano as president of UC system - latimes.com

What happened to things like academic credentials, instead of appointing political animals to academic positions?

That position isn't academic. It requires a strong appreciation of and for academics. Mostly it requires organizational and political skills. Napolitano has demonstrated competency in both those areas.

Its pretty common for politicians and other high ranking government folks to go on to head universities. At Purdue, We have Mitch Daniels who was gov of Indiana and before that cabinet member for W. Eisenhower was pres of (Princeton?) before running for pres.

It seems a high political profile will get you hired as university pres sometimes more so than academic credentials. Actually with Mitch, I believe most of the professors have PHD's and he does not....perhaps a law degree but perhaps he did not graduate from law school....not sure.

I don't care where she goes as long as it is not back here in AZ. I wish you luck UC. Plan on administration costs to rise, services to be cut, unrealistic goals to be set, funds shifted to fill "inadequacies" like a game of Tetris, accounting policies resembling lemmings marching over a cliff and abandonment when she finds it expedient.

No problem with her academic credentials. I do know quite a few people with a Master's degree who can't balance a checkbook though.

And what has she done with them over the past 20 years other than being a political whore? Getting good grades, being an exchange student, then getting a law degree isn't really that hard -- I'd venture to say that there are at least a few hundred attorneys in NYC with the same credentials, if not more interesting.

But my main beef is that absent mitigating academic experience, having someone go from what's essentially a police agency to a university chairship just smells wrong.

I don't think even WalMart would stoop to such a level. To begin with, if a woman as fat and ugly as Big Sis were to offer a shopping cart, lots of people would hightail it back to their car and throw gravel getting the hell out of there.

You got those on your resume?

As said before, it's not a teaching position, it's high level executive management in a political/government environment of a major state institution. How many of those NYC attorneys have that background?
