Cool Boat time!

I came across an interesting boat the other day that pending a successful sea trial next week and survey I'm going to buy.

Its a Penn Yan 26 similar to this one. What caught my eye was the condition. The boat is freaken mint its an 88 and looks cleaner and better kept than most 5 year old boats I see. Its a two owner boat, first owner kept it until 2 years ago when he passed away, but it was clearly his baby. I love the layout its a nice spray out fiberglass cockpit, has a nice custom radar arch for trolling rods, and all in all is laid out better than any Penn Yan I have ever been on.

But the best part is wait for it.

I pop the engine hatch expecting to see an older 454, instead I'm greeted by the white valve covers of a Cummins B series! I'm not sure what vintage it is, I'll have to get the serial number, but it was re powered I'm guessing in the late 90's with a B series Cummins.

Hope it goes well, next weekend I'd like to take my new boat out.

Not exactly what I want, but I figure I'll run it a few years until I can get into something larger. Maybe a baby Hatt 32.

I have been thinking about an upgrade to a 55ft Hattares since I bought my first boat when I was 10. I'm just a little closer now that I was back than in my old aluminum boat.

You say it is a B Cummins. Does that mean that it is a BT? Is it a 6BT?

My dad bought a '79 Penn Yan Sportfish Cruiser when I was a kid. What a blast.

Enjoy!!

Nice find, C! Those old Penn Yan's are pretty stout if not particularly "sexy." The discovery of that Cummins must have been a pleasant surprise! Is it a tunnel drive?

I'm actually thinking of going a little smaller for awhile. I'd like to find a 50's vintage 15'-16' aluminum runabout (ideally a dual cockpit, to polish ) for running around the lake at our camp. It'll be awhile until I can afford a boat big enough for all of us to take off for a long weekend. My SeaRay is kind of stuck in between, too small for extended cruising and too big (3750 lbs. with fuel and water) to just trailer around pop in and out of the water.

Looks to be in great shape! Interesting choice of motors in the Cummins, I suppose this won't be much of a speedboat.

I'm just guessing that if it replaced a single-screw big block Chevy (or even a 350 which would move a 26 footer along fairly decently) it's probably a 6BT. I'd guess cruising speed is probably around 25 kts, topping out at 28-29 kts (not too shabby for a fairly heavy boat that size).

The only way for us to find out for sure is for us to join him on his sea trial.

Yeah I'll have to wait to the sea trial. But its not a tunnel drive just a regular straight shaft inboard. According to the literature it weighs around 6,300 pounds and its wide.

I suspect the Cummins will push it along as well as a V8, I'm not looking for a speed demon, either. If I can cruise around 20 I'll be happy. Most of the time its to rough anyway to go to fast.

The prop on it is large by gas inboard standards, that diesel has a lot of torque, I imagine docking might not be so bad.

Having a Cummins in there is nice. I recently purchased a Voyager 26 with a relatively new Westerbeke 12hp.

Fairly heavy but with with the wide beam it should plane pretty easily. Pull it back to 20 kts and you'd probably be at 7-8 gph. That wouldn't be too shabby!

Just curious since I don't know much about them, is the engine somewhere near the helm seat (far enough forward so it doesn't want to squat)? In a box or flush deck?

Docking a single screw isn't too bad, when I was growing up that's what we had. It's really not unlike docking a single outboard except your using your rudder and the prop wash rather than turning the entire OB (duh ).

I also would fully expect the Cummins to do as well as the V8. The reason is that they can pitch the prop to match the torque curve of the engine.

Is it a 6BT?
