Hellbanning is a practice used by some online community managers for protecting a community against Internet trolls. The practice involves making a user invisible to all other users. From the hellbanned user's perspective, however, they seem to be participating normally in the community. Hellbanning is or has been used at sites such as Something Awful, and Hacker News. It is sometimes criticized as sneaky or dishonest, because the hellbanned user is unaware they have been hellbanned.
Hellbanning is similar to the practice known as selective invisibility, in which individual comments are rendered invisible to everyone except the poster in order to eliminate disruption they might otherwise cause.[3] Hellbanning is sometimes also called "Coventry" or "ghost posting" or "shadowbanning."

It would be interesting to know how he's doing this. Seems to me it must be through the use of proxy servers or TOR or JonDo. Can't such entry be blocked? The guy's politics and ugliness notwithstanding, it's kinda creepy and makes the site operators look pretty foolish.

I do not think it reflects at all on the mod's. BB is like a terrorist in that he can pop up any where any time and he sets the rules by which he plays. The mods cannot do anything but to wait for BB to show up. Then they need to verify he is back and they pop him. I do wish the process was quicker but so long as he gets ousted that is what counts.

I must admit I am some what intrigued about his pathological obsession with this site. I wonder what causes a person to go off the rails like that?

Sheesh, to think that I got called "childish" for expressing a note of satisfaction when chilicutt got himself banned.... and here's a whole thread of the hallelujah chorus over this "Phil" character getting caught and banned again.

davidmash is right on one count - it IS creepy, the guy's seeming obsession with this site - but it's also getting creepy the way everybody else seems obsessed with HIM, and start playing whack-a-mole whenever his latest incarnation shows up.

Frankly, it's starting to sound like a bunch of kids in a treehouse, that keep pulling up the rope behind them, so the neighborhood geek can't climb up to join them.

For the sake of someone who has absolutely no idea of the history behind this ongoing saga, could somebody - objectively if possible - explain just who and or what this "Phil" character is/was?

An interesting subject this Phil guy....

Isnt his M.O. to create accounts that lay dormant for years,in which he can monitor the sites activity's, and then come on line thruogh that account when he is flushed out?

One thing that is disturbing, is how this charecter will research an individual forum member's previous post's-then cherry pick excerts from the post, then dissect the phrases and insert his fabrication, thereby destroying the persons character.

What puzzles me is how an individual finds the time for all of this...I know I do not have the time for such activity's.

Negativity: Bias
Interestingly, this bias seems to occur at the Neurological level. The brain has more neural activity when it is reacting to negative information, than when it is reacting to positive information.
Assuming these results apply generally, we are actually hard-wired for negativity.

Sociopath-Terrorist
A sociopath who has adopted a terror agenda as a cover for his pre-existing rage and is seeking posthumous grandeur.

Madness
One of the definitions of madness is repitition: countless times of the same action, always expecting a differant result.

Finally, what is also disturbing to me...are the forum members who click with this individual..and share in his mind-set.

It's Chicago's politics at it's finest...You don't like the guy's politics, you make him go away. When more share his politics and mindset, you start attacking them as well.

When he's attacked, he outs himself by using language and POV from his original self, which clues the whiners on to him, causing another banning.

Instead of acting like a bunch of thugs, put him, and anyone else you disagree with, on the ignore list and move on.

This type of dog-pile BS does nothing more than bring the entire site down.
