Hey JP on any FORD TRUCK LOVER....

my F-150 crapped out yesterday and we just barely made it home. The truck was making a loud grinding noise in the drivers side front. I thought it might be the brake pads, but when I would brake the truck would stop evenly. When I got home, thank God, I looked under the truck and saw that the brake assembly cover was bent. Upon further inspection, the brake system looked fine. I touched wheel bearing cap and it was cool to the touch. I give up, WDYT JP or anyone else.

I'd pull check bearings as insurance, then double check the brakes to see if maybe the retainer clip is missing or not. If it's all fine, straighten out the piece of sheetmetal and take it for a spin. If the sound is gone, you are probably ok.

I tried to drive it to Church this morning, and it made a loud clunking noise like something was fixing to fall off.

Ball joint? Coil spring trying to pop out of its perch? Did the rate of clunking increase and decrease with changes of speed? Did it occur only when you hit a bump, or tried to make a tight, low speed turn?

I thought they all did that.

I had the same thought, everything looks good and tight.

My bets on the bearing, We've had this happen on a Tahoe and also Its happened on my ranger, be willing to bet some of the bearings are missing hence the clunking

Was Ford still using individual roller bearings on F150s, or are they the cartridge style ( expensive)?

Yep, front wheel bearings are supposed to be checked/adjusted/greased every so often on that era F150 - ask me how I know.

Good news is if it's just the bearings that need attention, fairly easy and relatively inexpensive DIY job - again, if it's JUST the bearings.

Haynes manual even has the correct procedure with all the torques, believe it or not.

Here is the best way to fix it:

1. Take a rag and dip it in some gas.
2. Place said rag into the Ford's gas tank filler.
3. Light, and move away briskly.
4. Buy a Chevy or GMC.
