Dodge Travco motorhome
Old Flat Top | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Another cool-looking vehicle. This one seems to always park near the Hells' Angels clubhouse on 3rd St/NYC -- the owner isn't affiliated apparently. Photo isn't mine, but I couldn't help notice the thing when walking there this evening. |

I love those old Travcos and Winnebagos of the same vintage. Would love to restore and drop a Cummins in one some day.

That's a Travco 270. I used to own a Travco 220. I'll see if I can find a picture of it.

At the very end of production, they started putting a Detroit 8.2 diesel in them.

When getting out of the Army in '71, I ended up working until the Spring Semester at the Dodge Trucks shop on Irving Blvd. in Dallas. We worked on motor homes like that. We also had chassis' delivered to us that were used for building motor homes. Most of them had a 440 and Torqueflite. If they weren't well maintained they didn't last long because of the CONSTANT fully loaded condition. Some of them were a real Bltch to work on, since they were built AROUND components that needed to be accessed. At that point in time, Dodge had a Lions share of that market, I always assumed that this was due to them selling them way cheaper than Ford or GM, but I don't know that to be true.

Maybe but those old 440s were pretty high quality too. IIRC they had steel cranks.

Most of the early motor homes were made in Northern Indiana (Waukarusa, I believe) which was just a "hop, skip and a jump" from the old Dodge truck plant. It was a sensible idea considering the Dodge Bro.'s early history with Indiana's motoring industry.

Lots of those Travco's are still on the road with the 440's or 413's. Some even had the 318's in them. Certainly in the 220, the drivetrain wasn't being pushed very hard. They did have a funky brake system in them. Some had large vacuum reservoirs and others had a system which ran off the the power steering system I think. Problems were hard to diagnosis when they occurred.

That could be the reason that production ended- one of the worst engines ever made by anyone.
