Its official. My E420 is Smoke Silver

On the registration, the colour is listed as brown. Somewhere else, I found it listed as gray.

My mechanic says its champagne.

And, to tell you the truth, depending on the light, I understood how someone might come to a quick conclusion on any of those colours, although knowing Mercedes paint colours have more nuance in the description, I knew there was a more precise name available.

Based on this document, I had it down to two colours, Smoke Silver, or Canyon Brown. (Yes, I know on the chart they look completely different.)

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/articles/1994_brochures/1994_USA_paintwork+upholstery.pdf

So, I located the paint code, and voila! 702- Smoke Silver.

Since discovering that, I think I can feel just a little sportier handling, and a touch better acceleration.

My mechanic should have known better.

Congrats on your E420! It's always fun looking up equipment details of the cars & thankfully MB makes it pretty easy now with the EPC.

That's definitely Smoke Silver (rauchsilber). Looks very nice! Love the two tone effect of the early-mid '90s cars.

I see we've had similar Mercedes models.

190D, 1987 260 or 300E, and now 1994 E420!

Talking My 702/265

*I* also used to have a Smoke Silver 702/265 (mushroom interior) 1990 560SEC.

I bought it back in 2009 I think, but did not really need a another car identical 560SEC beside my 1991 Pearl black 199/261 (black interior) in the garage.

Got it from the Jaguar/Land Rover dealer in Ventura, California - where it had been consigned. Just 88k on the clock when I got it.
Tipped off to it by a friend who ALSO had a Smoke Silver 560 SEC! This one here is his, ALSO a 1990 Smoke Silver:

.

Here's another look at the one I had - (the day I bought it at the Jaguar dealer)... the car eventually became known as "The Smoke".

She never repaid me though, not one cent.

So I sold it to a g/f that was supposed to pay for it. She never repaid me though, not one cent.

So I went and stole it back! Heeee!!!

Here's the story/pic's of that caper, if you are interested...

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/off-topic/1518603-stealth-reposession-1990-smoke-1990-sec.html

Brought it back here, look at all her crap inside of it!
In my garage at home:

Fixed it up and sold it again, this time to a musician in Tampa, who still has it; In fact I met him in person last year in Geneva when he was performing in Verbier Switzerland at a classic music festival. I had a rental Audi and the next day or two we toured Switzerland Italy and France in my rental A6! He still has the car

(sorry for the thread hijack...but thought you might like to know...)

Yes, we have! In just a little different order, how cool!

Not sure what my next MB will be, I'd love to have another diesel.....

BTW, nice SEC Jim B! Glad it finally went to a good home!

That's ok, JimB.

As far as I'm concerned, threads take a life of their own. Nobody owns them, unless the OP is asking a specific question, in which case common courtesy for responders is probably to make sure the question is at least addressed.

If my thread starts an exchange of stories, all the better!

And, in fact, the thread you linked me to was, for me, the way I found out about `Smoke Silver'! I had already read it.

Yes, MB_FanAddict, for a while I thought I might like a W124 diesel, but in the end, got seduced by the sultry tones of a German V8.

Achtung.

And now, in a strange twist, I find out by reading the paint code on my 300E, that it was in fact, Champagne, although the previous owner told me it was Fawn Gold.

Well, she was a woman, so I believed her.

Yeah, just about any color trumps brown when it comes to "liveliness"!

Such is the way of wily women...particularly if you fawned over her? (Ouch, I know.)

In the 210 model they call smoke silver "desert silver." From the pictures, it looks to be much the same color, but in both generations it's rare enough I can't recall seeing them in person side by side.

I had a W202 that was "smoke silver" and when parked next to a W210 in "desert silver" the W210 had a little more tan in it.

My now gone E430 was "Smoke Silver." I was surprised when I looked up the color code after buying it that this is what it was called as it looked some shade of tan to me. My E320 is Metallic Silver.

I'm not so sure about that. My E430 was "smoke silver."

LOL.

No, I can tell you I lusted after the car much more than the woman.

Besides, at the time I was dating the love of my life, but that ended when she thought I'd be better off buying a Pontiac Grand Am.
