This is why I drive a Ranger. Half of the ones on CL are manuals

...And, they aren't being made anymore. No more mini pickups, no more manual transmissions, but everything must have navigation and Bluetooth.

It makes me sad that they have been discontinued. However, the current ones will be around for quite a while-I still see late 80s Rangers on the road around here all the time. You really can't beat body-on-frame for durability.

Which is why I am looking at the 6.9, as Dodge finally stuck a 6 speed auto behind it.

If you speak of the cummins 5.9 the trans is an allison 6 speed which I understand is pretty well respected.

I thought Dodge had put the 545RFE behind the 5.9 and the 68RFE behind the 6.7....?

I thought the Cummins+Allison only came in the medium/heavy duty trucks?

You are correct, the Allison was never offered in a Dodge PU. The antiquated 48RE is quite reliable at stock power, and has the potential for serious upgrades, outperforming even the Allison for severe duty such as sled pulling. Not bad for a design that's almost 50 years old. The 68RFE is adequate at stock power, it will not tolerate any significant power increase. For those who are serious, the Aisin is available as a $2500 option.

Well, I would have sworn at some point that chevy ford and dodge all offered the Allison and the aisin behind their big diesel pickups....guess I would have been wrong!;)

Unless you were making a bunch of money selling the chevy and getting the dodge, id consider it an easy way to blow yet more money, but who am I kidding? you spent two years average wages in cash on some other toy like a week ago, so you might as well own both trucks at the same time. You can tie the bumpers together and see which one will pull the other. :D

Both engines are excellent, the dodge might get better fuel economy possibly has been my experience.

Sounds like a great idea for a Youtube video:)

Most of the more recent Ford*, GM, and Dodge/Ram diesels are all pretty good trucks. They each have their strong and weak points. Practical considerations depend primarily on the intended use for the truck. What do you use it for?

*Exception: 6.0 Powerstroke had ISSUES. I know a guy who has one that's doing fine, but I read too many horror stories from when they first came out to ever take a chance on one unless it's dirt cheap.

Yup. 6.0s either last 500k or 50k. My neighbor has one with 350k on it, runs like brand new.

5.9 and 6.7 Cummins have an excellent reputation in the marine world.

I think they get 480hp out of the 6.7 in M trim now and I never hear of one popping.

Much better motors than CAT junk, stay away from the yellow God...

I had never either, went over to square with the landlord, he asks me about working on an old 94ish dodge that needed a tranz, i told him it probably wouldn't be worth the hassle just to resell--but if it were a diesel.......... He told me he also had a 94ish Cummins diesel one--That threw a rod , I told him I never heard such a thing.

So anybody know of an avalable 12 valve block ??

iwrock 06-20-2014 04:53 PM

Bump, anyone have any more experience with them?

I'm familiar with Powerstroke 6.4 issues now, so nothing really scares me.

Hatterasguy 06-20-2014 05:24 PM

They are pretty similar to your Powerstroke except they run good right from Cummins...:D
