Lets talk Aphasia.

I just spent the last 5 days in the UK Medical center being treated for stroke symptoms. The tests came back normal. The Doctors couldn't figure it out. Finally a Doctor said it was Aphasia. I was also very low on B12. They have me taking massive doses of B12

Oh, I'm very sorry to hear that. Are you able to speak/read/write ok? Are the symptoms gone/to what extent?

Oh, and what the heck are you doing in the UK? :P

I will be praying for you tonight.

For those of you who don't know what Aphasia is, here is a description from the Mayo Clinic (how can you not trust a clinic with mayo in the name!).

Quote:

Definition

By Mayo Clinic staff

Aphasia is a condition that robs you of the ability to communicate. Aphasia can affect your ability to express and understand language, both verbal and written.

Aphasia typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or a head injury. But it can also come on gradually from a slowly growing brain tumor or a degenerative disease. The amount of disability depends on the location and the severity of the brain damage.

Once the underlying cause has been treated, the primary treatment for aphasia is speech therapy that focuses on relearning and practicing language skills and using alternative or supplementary communication methods. Family members often participate in the therapy process and function as communication partners of the person with aphasia.

Mölyapina 08-17-2013 08:43 AM

Robert, do they think that Vitamin B12 deficiency is the underlying cause here? Please let us know how everything is going.

link 08-17-2013 09:24 AM

Sorry to learn of this. Traveling can cause stresses that can produce all kinds of problems.

Did your docs check for what is called high levels of homocystene? If not, ask them to do so.

If your aphasia has past, you are out of the woods, but a fairly complete medical workup is a good idea once you get home.

elchivito 08-17-2013 10:23 AM

Apahsia is a set of symptoms, not a cause IIRC. Sometimes doctors figure if they can put a fancy name on it patients won't ask any more questions.
Were it me, I'd want to know what caused it.

el presidente 08-17-2013 10:29 AM

Hope you're feeling better my man!

kerry 08-17-2013 10:35 AM

UK=University of Kentucky I think. Hope they find the cause.

If I understood what I read correctly, B12 deficiency can cause Aphashia.

Dubyagee 08-17-2013 01:36 PM

H pylori can cause a B12 deficiency.

Pooka 08-17-2013 03:06 PM

I had a stroke a few years ago that caused this for a time. It was weird to hear myself talking in a normal voice and seeing everyone look at me because all my words were coming out slurred or in the wrong order.

I also, for a few weeks, had synesthesia which is where you hear in color. This is hard to explain, but when someone would say something cross to me I would see everything in a red hue, nice sounds caused everything to go blue... It was like putting on shaded glasses for each different sound.

And then it all went away. Slowly but surely everything returned almost to normal.

My Doctors told me I had a stroke because I was old, I told them having a stoke will make you feel your age.

Oof. That's got to be nasty. Let us know of any updates, but only as you are able. I hope you are sleeping okay?

I'm really sorry to hear about this. It makes me sad, it really does... I hate to think of you going through even more struggles.

I had a massive headache on the left side of my head. I knew in my mind what I wanted to say, but couldn't say what I wanted. This same thing happened to me several years ago. there is a thread about it on BW. Two different hospitals thought it was a stroke. But the MRI's said that my brain was fine. I'm still very weak but doing much better. Now that I think about it, this was coming on for about two weeks, I don't know what caused it, I wasn't under any stress or anything. Any thoughts?

Just read up on this, and it seems very likely. I will pass this info on to the Doctors.

Sounds similar to panic attacks I used to get, started around 19 year old. Didn't fit the bill of normal panic attacks - I'd get super dizzy and not be able to speak. I wouldn't know what I wanted to say, but I just couldn't think, couldn't respond, couldn't walk (dizziness), just kind of got in a daze. Wasn't panicked, just completely dumbfounded and speechless, but mine was triggered by stressful situations. Visited a bunch of doctors, brain scans, heart scans, etc. they said everything was fine. Never really did find out what the problem was.

Still happens sometimes but not as regularly and not as severe. I had worse side effects from the prescribed medicines than the panic attacks eventually -- after gaining about 80lbs in just a few months and having emotional issues and personality change (thank goodness I had people to talk some sense into me). Dropping off that medicine was rough too. Never again.

I'll ask my gf if she has any suggestions on types of specialists to see (she is deep in the neuro field). In the meantime, eat more porkchops! Good luck bud, hope you feel better

A friend told me to bypass the neurologist
and see an ophmalogist. I may be wrong with the doctor type. I was perfectly calm when the problem started.

If you're wrong about the "doctor type" how do you know who to see?

That is true, I have an appointment with my family doctor next week, I will ask him then.

Also, there seems to be a LOT less clutter in my head since this episode.

elchivito 08-22-2013 10:19 PM

Good plan. Like I said, Aphasia is a symptom. If I were you I'd want more explanation than that. Saying "you have Aphasia" is about the same as a mechanic telling you "they all do that."

Robert's lovely wife.;)

Mölyapina 08-23-2013 08:18 AM

Oh...! Happy late anniversary!

The Clk Man 08-24-2013 09:12 PM

This is interesting, I was talking to the guy who use to run the car lot next door
for many years, and he told me that he had to retire because of health reasons.
His medical problems was indentical to the problems I had the other week. I think it's time to check into this. :)

The Clk Man 11-17-2013 09:28 AM

Finally we are getting somewhere. The Docs did a sleep test on me last night. About 8:30 I arrived at the facility and they hooked all of the wires up asked me some questions and off to sleep I went. Somewhere in the night they hooked me up to the breathing machine and I slept good the rest of the night. They said I have a bad case of Sleep apnea. Today for the first time, I woke up fairly rested. Praise The Lord. The Lab Guy said that I will have to sleep with one of those breathing thingies on for a long while.

Also the Docs want to do a "Lexus" test,(I can't see why they couldn't just go ahead and give me the "Mercedes" test".) and some kind of dye test.

Here's more.

Echo.
Carotid Doppler Bilateral.

elchivito 11-17-2013 10:50 AM

Everybody should have a carotid ultrasound. Most don't get one till they stroke out.

Preventative healthcare . . . What a concept!

The Clk Man 11-18-2013 10:54 PM

I was supposed to have a follow up appointment next Friday to discuss the results of the sleep test, but today the Doc's secretary said the Doctor wants to see me first thing tomorrow morning.

The Clk Man 11-19-2013 04:00 PM

UPDATE. Evidently I stop breathing 84 times per hour. The Lady Neurologist says that I have severe Sleep Apnea and that I need to be put on one of those Bypap machines at night. Evidently I have been this way for a long time. I don't know how this connects with the episode back in August when I was in the Hospital though. Hopefully I will finally be able to get some sleep.

barry12345 11-19-2013 05:59 PM

Not trying to be a smart ass. Our older dog to me seems to stop breathing for awhile in his sleep and then breathing eventually resumes. This is fairly often by the way.

At times I have wondered if breathing would ever resume but know now it always does. He has been like this for years.

So you sleep like our dog or vice versa. I know it is not breed specific in these particular cases.

It looks like that seems to be the case. I sleep like your dog. Maybe you could get him one of the cpap machines. :D

The Clk Man 11-21-2013 06:15 PM

The bypap machine took a little getting use to, and fir the first time in no telling how many years, I actually slept through the night. I went through the whole day today without falling asleep, something I haven't done in many years. Our male pug did his inspection and I guess he approves of the setup. Every is well in clkman land. :D

Aquaticedge 11-21-2013 06:18 PM

Glad you are better!

elchivito 11-21-2013 06:24 PM

Apnea is a scary thing. Glad you got to the bottom of it.

barry12345 11-22-2013 12:23 AM

Great to hear of a speedy resolution. I sleep like a rock and always have been thankful for it. There still are the infrequent times when I just have too much on my mind or plate. This can make it extremely hard to get to sleep when it happens in my case.

I received the test results Friday and the Doc said everything looked normal, but in the next breath he said that these tests are just a snapshot in time and that he has heard of people having normal tests and dropping dead of a heart attack a week later. I didn't know if he was trying to be funny or what. There must be something else causing the sharp pains in my chest that happen every few weeks or so. I think I will try a new Doctor. Hope everyone has a great CHRISTmas. :D

t walgamuth 12-22-2013 10:16 PM

Thanks Robert. You have a merry Christmas too. Glad you are getting some sleep. Hope the chest pains are nothing serious.
