Jimi Was Right!
If only a little early. It's so smoky here that green traffic lights now look blue. It's so smoky that my work cancelled operations and sent everyone home. Weather reports say Reno is actually worse. I'm about to hit the road on my bike and see if Virginia City and Dayton are any better.
For those not getting the Hendrix reference, listen at 1:54: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - The Wind Cries Mary - YouTube All the smoke is coming from a wildfire at Yosemite, another wildfire near Lake Tahoe, and Reno is getting bonus smoke from yet another wildfire in Sun Valley. I've lived here eight years and I've never seen it this bad.

Free baked potatoes!
Was that too far? I never know...

Yes. Driving to Idaho is too far to go for free baked potatoes.

It gets better. I'm supposed to call the call in line to see if we're working today. All of a sudden I've got no cell reception, and I haven't had a land line since 2006.

We had a fire like this west of Tulsa about a year ago. It was weird with highways being shut down and a lot of houses burned out.
There are fires here but nothing like further west. Oklahoma is not all prairie, but it is surely not a land of giant trees. The fires here burn up a lot of area, but they are small even when they are big. |

Finally got reception after I started getting ready for work. Work was on, as I suspected, however toward the end of the shift the wind shifted and it started getting very smoky, so they sent us home about 45 minutes early. Now to make up for the lost production I'm working two days that I wasn't supposed to work before. This will most likely result in me getting 20 hours of overtime next week. I'm not really looking forward to doing it, but I am looking forward to the paycheck.

Two issues might be involved in more serious forest fires: buildup of fuel from years of fire suppression (virtual certainty), and generally dryer forests from global warming (more open to debate).
At any rate, I suspect that this is what the early stages of desertification look like.

For those seriously interested in fire, "Fire in America: A Cultural History of Wildland and Rural Fire" Stephen Pyne. Highly recommended historical perspective.
