w124 paint color question

hey everyone,

i am hunting for a 1994-95 E320 wagon. I am fairly familiar with w124's but im a little confused about the factory paint colors.

one wagon i am looking at is black with a gray lower molding. this 2-tone color combo seems to be the most common.

another wagon i am looking at is black with a black lower molding. much less common. were the cars available from the factory like this? i know lots of people want the monochromatic look and paint the lower panels the same as the rest of the car.

monochromatic wagons aren't "sport wagons" are they?

thanks

eric

I am pretty sure that they were infact repainted. I have seen few one tone paintjobs from cars built between 1990 and 1995. When I ask the owners about their paint, they either say they bought it like that, or they had it repainted.

I believe virtually all black W124's have the gray lower body cladding.

Even 040 black cars came this way.

I have, however, spoken to one owner of a '92 500E in black 040 whose car came with matching black lower body panels, and they appear to have come this way.

Do you know what the paint code of this car is?

Is it 040 black or 199 pearl black?

The 93 300E in 040 black that I sold recently had semi-glass black bumpers and cladding...I work in a Mbz bodyshop and it certainly looked original to me. It also looked a lot slicker than the matte gray bumpers and cladding, IMHO.

IIRC, all W124s left the factory with some form of tu-tone (even the white, red, green and blue cars)....they didn't make a true monochomatic look.

If the lower boddy cladding is painted an exact match body color (on U.S.-spec W124s), it has been done aftermarket IMO.

How does one go about finding out the paint code for the lower cladding? I've recently purchased an entire set (w/rocker panels) for my S124 and would like to repaint them the same color, along with my existing bumpers. They're a sort of metallic bluish-grey.

Depends on your body paint color. The code is in the driver's side door jamb. List the code here and we should be able to get the correct paint code for the lower cladding.

My car is an '87, which didn't originally come with body cladding. I'm adding these items from a '93 or '94 400E, but I don't know what color it was (ebay purchase).

Here's a list of Mercedes-Benz paint codes:

http://www.landiss.com/paintcodes.htm

I'm guessing the paint code was probably spruce green, but a photo would help out greatly. Can you post a pic?

Hey there-

The black with grey cladding is factory, I'd bet a set of AMG alloys that the black lower cladding on the second car is a repainted example. There should be a color code for the body color, and one for the cladding. Just had some work done on mine, and the front apron was painted based on the code, just like the body's paint. Has a slightly shinier lutre than the rest of the cladding now, but the body guy said that the cladding is simply painted, not color impregnated or anything like that.

They appear to be the same color as the cladding in #259 and #264. My digital camera just died, so that's the best I can do for now.

The part number for the spray paint can (available from Mercedes-Benz) is 000 986 10 50 7700. This was used to touch up the bumpers on a '94 S600 and the bumpers and cladding on a '94 E320.

Hope this helps.
