Want to buy a suit...
 

Anyone have any pointers or a site to check out different styles? (possibly someplace to order one online?)

I've got a formal work event coming up, and don't want to be "that guy" who shows up under-dressed. :)

Darling Wife and I have been tremendously successful on ebay - shark skin mad men suits for half-a-Benjamin kinds of numbers...

If you're in too much of a rush for that stuff - hunt for Armani seconds. Best. Cuts. Ever.

A proper suit should be fitted and tailored for you.

Agree. Research your local tailors. They will love the business and take great care of you.

Or Prada. I buy brand suits for cheap and take them to a tailor for a custom fit, makes you look and feel like a million bucks.

I bought a couple suits at Men's Warehouse and they were tailored to me. They look pretty good but I made the mistake of buying "trendy" styles (3 button). If I had it to do over, I would get more generic styling.

If you go this route, beware that they will try and sell you a host of over priced accessories, shirts, belts, ties, etc...

:confused: If it's "formal" perhaps you should rent a tux and patent leather shoes???

As long as your clothes 'fit' your body - it's not important where you buy 'em from, or how much you pay. Sears and JC Penney's sell adequate mens dress wear.

If the work event isn't strictly needed, develop a bad case of flu the day before.

If that's not an option, consider a custom suit. I just got my first and it fits way better than my other suits. Substantially more expensive, but I got him to make two pairs of pants which will make it last much longer. I have a closet full of suits with worn out pants and almost brand new jackets.

I do agree there - but I've seen several different styles (like thin ties vs wide ties, colors, button arrangements, etc).

Want to check out the various styles before I walk in, that way, I'm not looking like a complete n00b and I'm not spending half of the day looking at different styles.

That's what I'd do. Suits and the men who wear them are a big part of what's wrong with this world.
