That's very cool! My first reaction was wondering how your did a low light photo without the stars moving. Or the earth actually...

Nice! What's the trick looks like a 1-2min exposure? You've got a ton of stars where you are though, the light pollution around here ruins it all.

Aperature was 4.5 ISO1600 exposure was 8-10 seconds, Focusing is the biggest problem, it was a pain in the butt to get right, this was one of 16 that turned out well of 80 or so I took. I'll post a picture of the settings if you wanna give it a whack yourself, I had hoped someone would like them enough to buy a print... but alas nobody has yet. I now have 830 images online... lots of views. 1 sell. It's coming up on a year of trying..

f/4.5, ISO 1600, 8-10 sec shutter speed, what lens? I've yet to do a good wide star-filled sky photograph. My night photography is pretty much subject-based http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/open-discussion/312004-shooting-stars-night-photography.html

ISO1600... man that is noisy. Why not go lower with a longer exposure?

X2 to TheDon. Here's what I do to get night shots and lightning shots --
Set focus to infinity and aperture as high it will go. Then do a 2-3min exposure at lower ISO for lower noise.

Very cool, J!
I'm going to have to have my wife try some shots up at our camp. Little to no light pollution. Last weekend we were up there and watched the Perseid meteor showers, saw 30+ in a little over an hour. She thought about playing with her camera and trying to catch some but decided to lay back, enjoy some wine and just relax.

Awesome shot! I managed something similar, though not as good as that, many years ago back in the Southern Hemisphere. Hope you get more good ones. I would like to see them when you do.

I haven't used my 18-55 in ages! I wish I had the time (and patience) to do star trails!

Most star trails are composite images. I've done a couple

Go for it! I bet a filter would help out too, judging by the composite shot, lets you set longer exposures in bright light. I got an adjustable ND filter for about $40 at ritz which is cool since you can just dial in the right amount for your shot and not carry a ton of different filters around.
