La-Z-Boy chair repair.
 

Has anyone here ever ordered replacement parts? If so, how difficult of a time did you have?

I have a 5 year old recliner that I dearly love. The square cross bar that attaches to the handle has a spot that is wore where a front support attaches. The plastic bushing that goes in the front support, and the cross bar goes through, has wore out, and it's been metal to metal for awhile...causing the cross bar to have a groove worn halfway through the bar, and the hole in the support piece has become mishapen. I need the support piece and the crossbar.

All information I have found claims that I need to take the chair to a dealer for parts replacement. It's a simple and easy replacement, and I am able to do it, if I had the parts.

Anyone have this issue before?

Could you have a local machinist make something up that would work?

Cost to have replacement part made would be prohibitive...I know that I would have charged $100 for the crossbar, and the support bracket is made of heavy sheet steel. Total, I personally would charge nearly $200 to special make the parts...if not more. Replacement would most likely be cheaper.

I have a friend in the furniture biz. He sells high end furniture, including recliners. It is possible to get a whole new recliner mechanism, but I don't know about Lazy Boy in particular. I don't think it's unreasonably expensive, but I honestly can't remember how much one is, just thinking that it wasn't too terrible.

Cost prohibitive?

Maybe I paid way too much, but spent $1,000 ten years ago on a "leather seating" Lazy Boy. Waited the monthsfour delivery. ****, took five years to break it in, and another five for the wife to get completely sick and tired of it. But it still works fine.

And it's the best seat in the house. Yet, it must go.

My point? I would spend a couple bills getting it fixed.

29 years ago, I bought a full-leather, Lane brand recliner from Nebraska Furniture Mart in Omaha, NE. It came with a lifetime parts replacement only warranty on the mechanism. That's the moving parts of the recliner doing it's thing, by rocking/swiveling/reclining/and the leg rest's moving parts.

About 20 years ago I had the mechanism R & Red by an indy furniture repair guy that worked out of his house. He came and picked it up in his van, replaced the mechanism, and brought it back all for $75.00.
I found this tradesman through a Haverty's Furniture Store nearest me. They had the names of indy repair guys - of which there's not too many that will come and pick it up to do the work.
NO charge parts - just labor. It's been rugged ever since.

Lazy-Boy Shoppes are all over the place, and I'll bet they know how to get parts for you, if there's a charge for them, and a tradesman in your area if you don't want to tackle the project yourself.

Sounds like you could weld a washer to the frame, and hammer in a bronze bushing. If welding isn't an option, rivet in a plate with a hole/bushing in the center.

If you sent me a picture with dimensions, I'd be happy to give a shot at fabricating the part. For free... :)

No one has mentioned the policies relating to their products of the lazy boy firm. It does sound like they may be primarily supporting their dealers for replacement parts as far as this thread goes.

I might contact the company by email with a very specific list of what you want. A case of nothing ventured nothing gained.

If that chair has a model number include it. Although all mechanisims may be the same in any given time period.

The support of a companies product by companies is all over the place in my experience. Lazy boy has a good portion of the recliner market. Unless the Chinese are getting really active in it. Makes me wonder if the lazy boys are still manufactured in the USA with the Chinese doing so much.

I don't have the receipt anymore...that was lost somewhere between here and Utah. I guess I could try calling the place we bought it from to see if they have the sales info still.

I appreciate that, but I would have to strip it down to get that info...

If the place that we bought it from can't come up with the sales info, I'll just have to use the local dealer and be prepared to pay out of pocket.

I really do like this chair...it's one of their zero gravity chairs where your feet are slightly above your heart when you are completely reclined, and it slightly rocks when far enough back. Next to the 1970's green and gold La-Z-Boy I had before the house fire, it's the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in. We went to 8 different places before I found what I consider a perfect fit for me...a new chair is out of the question.

I just got off the phone with the RC Willey store, and they had me in their computer. They said that the base and mechanism should have a lifetime warranty, and gave me La-Z-Boy's corporate number, which I'll call tomorrow. She told me that if they ask, to tell them that I bought it there and La-Z-Boy will call them for verification that I am the original purchaser. The chair still has the tag on the bottom with all the numbers they will need, and it can apparently be tracked to the seller.

If all goes well, this will be a free repair...which will be a great thing!
