Hmmmm? Sex is a pretty strong desire in most people. It's also optional, unlike food and drink. So if some institution wants to get its hooks deeply into an individuals consciousness, it's the natural place to sink them since if people will modify their sexual practices, they'll do lots of other things too.

I don't have another good hypothesis besides that. Does anyone else?

I would hazard a guess that if a religion can target any given behavior you do in there opinion. You have a predominance of sinners to use it as leverage on. This one is hitting below the belt though in my opinion.
