My city decided that Internet was a public utility and offers fiber to the home. I have the lowest tier plan and get 9.6 MB/S upload and download (though they advertise low tier as 15). It goes to stratospheric in the upper tiers -- up to 1 gigabit. LUS Fiber - Internet

I'd be highly uncomfortable with a firm which has every interest in mining/raping any content I transport over the Internet providing the last mile to my home. Plus they have a vested interest in pushing their version of the cloud/Internet -- if they run the last mile, they can kill competitors with the push of a button.

Sounds like a great reason to buy Google stock!

On the downside when the Google goes sentient and starts to attack us with the Facebook drones...we won't be able to use Google fiber to communicate...

Sounds like a great reason to hope for an 8.0 quake centered on Mountain View, CA. Or at least a Sherman Act action against Google. Far more potential for evil here than Microsoft can even dream of.

In any case, the states that bar Google Fiber entry are right, though for the wrong reasons. Top-to-bottom control over the Internet would be a terrible thing, and would actually have the potential to set innovation and freedom back a long way.

I wouldn't know who is less trustworthy, Comcast or Google. Comcast is trying to take hold of most of the market of cable and cable internet, which seems to me to be in violation of anti-trust laws. Google has little market share for ISP so I doubt they would be considered to violate those laws. Fiber is supposedly coming to Atlanta so I am sure I will be using it if I go to Georgia Tech (which it is looking like that is where I am going), which honestly should be nice. I am sure Comcast gathers and sells my info as well so if I had the choice, I would go with faster internet.

High speed broadband that is the same or > than LAN speed will open the door to a major paradigm change. Many will abandon the idea of the in-office servers and backups.

People will actually believe that no one outside of the company can access their data because it will appeal to the cheapskate in everyone, and information mining and loss will grow to unprecedented levels.

The worst part is that the trend will be all but unstoppable once it gets a foot hold.

TWC is so pathetic around here that most cell phone data plans are faster and cheaper.

Google Fiber ??? That sounds like some sort of Yuppie breakfast cereal to go with their lattes and Eco-harvested Chilean blueberries.
