I've been to opening day at the stadium - it's in my backyard -several times ('98, '99, '00) and always found everyone to be on their best behavior, extremely sociable, almost "too" friendly, etc., because basically it's a day game, a sunny spring day in california, everyone is playing hooky from work and everyone knows it and laughs about it, and baseball is finally starting. did things change that much in ten years?

Unfortunately, yes. A friend of mine recently said, "No one seems to be nice anymore". I concur, nice has left the planet. People seem to be getting meaner and less tolerant. Another friend whose sons are involved in high school sports recently told me that at a recent game, two sets of parents from the opposing teams got into a down and out fist fight.

Some people are a stick of dynamite waiting to go off and it seems that the trend is growing. I believe this represents the downward spiral of society in general. We are losing our grip on what is really important.

i rarely agree with you, but in this case, i concur. it's a baseball game. after all. it's a bit of mindless escapism, which we all need a little bit of, now and then.( and dodger stadium is a beautiful place, with downtown behind you and the san gabriel mountains in front of you. and a beautiful plot of grass in the middle of the city. ) i can't imagine getting that angry about such a thing, enough to beat the bejesus out of someone who likes another team?

I refuse to pay money to watch grown men play games.

The cheer leaders are a different story, we need more of them, especially in drag racing, auto crossing, wrc...

Good luck to the beaten man, I hope they find who did such a senseless act

No surprise, it's been a pretty big story in the Bay Area. I used to be a big NBA fan, in the 70s especially, went to many Sonics games. I've only been to one pro game of any kind in my 16 years in the Bay Area - a Giants game back in '02 - my company treated a bunch of us to a game. The Giants won that night and I was struck by the macho whooping of many young men as we filed out. Amazing how many have their self-esteem firmly linked to their team.

In no way meaning to blame the victim, I wouldn't wear foreign colors to a pro game. Too many knuckleheads for that. Some years back, I read about a NE Patriots fan who wore a team jersey to an Oakland Raiders game in Oakland. The guy said he realized too late what a mistake he made. Lucky to escape w/o getting stomped - he said he was getting threatened right and left.

Nimrods. Without an opposing team, YOU DON'T HAVE A GAME. Jeez . . .

it is possible that the fan (Brian Stowe) may not make a full recovery. SOMEONE(s) who were at the game witnessed the beating and need to come forward with the necessary information as to who did it.

I'm attending fewer and fewer public events, whether sports, plays, music, whatever. There are just too many whackos on the loose to risk it.

heard this morning that an arrest has been made in this case. As usual, ALL suspects are INNOCENT until proven guilty (something we've seemed to have forgotten in this country, BTW). Hopefully, they have the right guy and if not, they will continue to look for the someone or someones who committed this horrific assault.

When wearing an opposing team's colors triggers a brutal beating something is WAY wrong.

I'm really curious about how many bystanders were present. Was it a crowded milling about of people or just sparsely occupied? I don't recall if that was accurately stated. Hard to imagine that no one would stop something like that, if it was a big crowd anyway.

I'm unsure how many bystanders were present. Sometimes people are hesitant to get involved because they are afraid of getting hurt or getting shot. The people who beat him beat him good, it seems they had previous experience at beating people to put him in the hospital like that. Probably gang bangers getting off on committing violence against the innocent.....

Too bad the Guardian Angels weren't on the scene. They would have taken care of the problem......

Best day to commit your crime in San Francisco.

When I worked in the Courts in Criminal Felonies at the Hall of Justice on Bryant,we ALL used to joke around that the really savvy criminals in San francisco would do their crimes on the Giants' opening day in April..

Because the enitire SFPD would be at the stadium at Candlestick, watching the game.

Basically true.

Dodgers Found Partially Liable in $18M Verdict

Of the total payout, the jury determined the Dodgers shared 25% of the liability, while Sanchez and Norwood each were responsible for 37.5%. The money was for a mix of lost wages, past and future medical expenses and for mental and physical suffering.

Thanks for the update.

The Bryan Stow story was never going to have a happy ending, but at least this way his family will have some money to help care for him the rest of his life. He's certainly never going to see a dime from the criminals who put him in the hospital and left him seriously damaged for the rest of his life.

I love the note about the defense attorney, suggesting that Bryan caused his own injuries by being drunk and apparently talking trash to the guys who assaulted him.
