edIT: OK, to finish off the title... ...a vacuum leak?

I was thinking of doing this, but I had someone tell me yesterday that that would be pointless and that a smoke test is the only way to see if there are any vacuum leaks. Does this sound right?

(My struggles with the Buick continue...)

No, a vacuum gauge won't help you find vacuum leaks. Smoke test is the way to go. Is it the 3.1?

Yes, and if you're getting at the intake manifold gaskets, I have those on hand and am planning on replacing them this week or the next :).

I'm going to explore the fuel system first, though.

Spray carb cleaner all around the intake gaskets. If there is a leak, rpm will change.
