Is it worthwhile to hook up a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold to see if there is
edIT: OK, to finish off the title... ...a vacuum leak?
I was thinking of doing this, but I had someone tell me yesterday that that would be pointless and that a smoke test is the only way to see if there are any vacuum leaks. Does this sound right? (My struggles with the Buick continue...)

No, a vacuum gauge won't help you find vacuum leaks. Smoke test is the way to go. Is it the 3.1?

I'm going to explore the fuel system first, though.

Spray carb cleaner all around the intake gaskets. If there is a leak, rpm will change.
