Speaking only purchased new? GM. Hands down. Horror stories abound. But toyrota did me a solid on an engine failure in a PU truck, with a model year newer upgrade to a (brand spankin' new) 4runner and cash money back to my pocket. Not sure how to fault brands purchased used. Who knows what happened before you?

What's the most unreliable car you've ever owned?

Nice! I've always liked those but I would feel it's a death trap driving around here.

198X Reliant K Car

That article is a good read, VW comment was cute;

The second day after I bought it it left me stranded. After I fixed it, it left me stranded leaving the shop. It the left me stranded on random places for the same electrical issue, one time being at the middle of an intersection. The suspension, convertible roof, ignition system and anything you can think of was replaced and had to be bought new.

I decided to sell it when it caught on fire...

My worst car was a 2012 Nissan Altima I bought new. The CVT made noise from 3000 miles till we traded it in on my wife's current Honda CR-V. In addition to the CVT issues it had squeaks, AC that didn't cool, heat that didn't heat and a habit of not starting if the key fob wasn't in the holder in the dash. I will never own another Nissan product again.

my "THE WORST" award goes to the 1996 Chrysler Cirrus I bought new. It regularly warped front brake rotors every 10k to 15k miles, and "sorry, brakes aren't covered under warranty". (Chrysler had the worst dealer support ever back then. Hope they've gotten better!)Having them turned didn't help. Had to buy new ones from NAPA to get best results. Other than that, it wasn't TOO bad till around 60k miles. Then all hell broke lose. Starter, radiator, fuel pump, water pump, front brake calipers, I can't remember what else. We dumped it soon as it was paid off. Total POS.
It was only outdone in the "Total POS" catagory by the '86 Audi 5000 I traded in for it.
Next in line was the '97 Ford F150. It was my Check Engine Light special. I got smart, sold it, and now own an awesome old '93 F250 with the 460cid. I LOVE this truck!

The GM built 1990 -92 trofeos I started seeking out back in the late 90s were good cars except for one problem ,the transmissions would always go out at around the 120k mark. These were built with the reliable v6 3800 series motor that GM put into almost everything back in the 90s.The transmissions were another story ,somekind of built in exact failure mileage point of some sort ,I could go to the yard and find 9 out of 10 cars with this engine /tranny setup and the mileage read was always from 122k to 135k .I owned three different trofeos in that timeline w/ 2 of them having trannie failures ,the 3rd I sold before the mileage reached the threhhold.Another part of GMS failure was the dash component on these cars ,a computer type of dash system that ran you north of $300 to rebuild ,for new forget about it.Some computer nerd made a killing putting these back to working order for unfortunate buyers ,all in all a unique looking car of the times, I ehjoyed the cars otherwise.

A couple of Chrysler products weaned me from the big three for life. Rentals of some of the big three cars since have not changed my mind yet.

Things like sitting in Penn at Hershey with a small trailer full of mig welders and supplies. Go to pull away and the whole electrical system drops out as the engine quits. All the dash lights going out at the same time really got my attention.

Starts right up again but did not want to risk being stuck along the highway. Stay another night and get to the Chrysler dealer early the next morning. Decent dealership that seems competent.

We have heard of this problem before but have no ideal of the cause. Neither has the maker. You will probably make it home. Also since the car is still under warranty you should have the engine replaced.

As I drove away I could not figure what the mechanic found about the engine he did not like. It was burning no oil and sounded very normal to me. Performed well too.

Anyways the car ran flawlessly home and about six months more before the engine called it a day. It never did the electrical thing again.

I changed the engine as it was now past warranty and sold the car. That car had almost countless additional issues as well. At the same time many where happy with them.

2001 Isuzu Trooper. Transmission died on cue at 110,000. Rebuilder took my money and ran. Had to buy a used one to replace. ABS went shortly after. Speed sensors cost close to $400 new.
Then I started getting random CELs for running lean couldn't be diagnosed for anyone. Finally wound up changing manifold gaskets, fuel pressure regulators, swapping injectors and changing out a half dozen sensors. Eventually, something worked and sold it in good conscience after it had been running right for a couple months.
Calculated my repair costs at around $0.50/mile. And that's with me doing most of the labor other than the trannsmission.

Luck of the draw sometimes. One of our daughters purchased a new car of that make and it was the most trouble free car she ever has had. When she was finished with it she passed it on to the wife. It was still really good and reliable.

Decent amount of total accumulated miles as well. She purchased in new from a GM dealer.

My Mom's 70 VW squareback would fit here, but I never owned it.

I'll nominate my Awful Audi, a '71 Super 90 wagon, bought used in 1980.
Over the next 10 years in addition to normal wear & tear items, it needed an engine rebuild, replacement head, lower control arm, rear torsion-bar, transaxle overhaul, shifter linkages, starter-motor, CV joints, and misc smaller parts. To be fair, it had over 100K on it when I got it, was fairly easy to work on for a FWD, and I loved how it drove. In between the engine rebuild and transaxle overhaul, in 1982 I took it on an awesome 7000-mile cross-country road-trip to California without any serious problems. So I put up with all it's flaws until 1990, when the rear torsion-bar snapped for the second, and final time. The part was no longer availible, not even from Germany. So that finished it.
Replaced it with a 3-year old Isuzu pickup, which was the MOST reliable vehicle I've ever owned.

Happy Motoring, Mark

My 30V Volkswagen Passat. Parts were double the price of Mercedes parts, and damn near every repair required an adaptation with the VAG-COM. The alternator was weak, so the car would dip below 12V and loose the throttle adaptation and go into limp mode. To replace the alternator the book time was something obscene and recommended pulling the core support, radiator, ac, etc. We did it on a lift, removed a motor mount and tilted the motor. Then the throttle itself went bad, and had to be sent out to be rebuilt.

Then it developed a miss, plugs and wires were expensive.

Then it developed a vacuum leak, the crankcase vent hoses snaked all over the place, and were somewhat pricey each.

I spent as much on repairs as I paid for the car. In the end, half the car was new, it ran awesome, and at least 3 years later the person I sold it to was still driving it having done zero maintenance. And I made money on the car.

Datsun 2000's are very, very collectible and sought after in Japan.

It's a shame they are virtually ignored here.
