Whats up with today's society? Manners and respect for others all went down the drain. Today I went over to my friend's house to play basketball. While I was giving him a ride.. he opens the door hard causing the door to open all the way out and getting it stuck in the grass. When he tried to pull the door to close it, it wouldn't budge. Then he forcefully pulled it shut. I told him why did you do that? And my other friend in the car said to "chill.. its a 14 year old car!". I felt like kicking both of their asses right here and then.
![]() I don't understand why people have no respect for other people's belongings. They know I love my car and treat it well (unlike my friend who has a 92 sunbird that is going downt he drain!).. and regardless of its age shouldn't mistreat it or make fun of it. Just felt like I had to share my anger and disappointment someplace. Sorry ![]() |

I was thinking of that... but decided to keep my anger inside and use it in the basketball game(proved more effective)

I'm one of those that has friends follow the rules or they dont touch my stuff.
I can be a great friend, but I have limits on things and my friends know to accept it. With that said. If my friend ends up thinking I am an *******, thats their problem, especially if they did somehting like that and didn't at least apologize. I think you should explain to your friend, that while the car may be 14 years old, its still better than most cars on the road, more solid, more reliable, and better looking. On top of that, This car was $XXXXX when new, that doesn't mean that after 14 years it still isn't an $XXXXX car, it still is, its just not worth that on the market, but the same build quality, and everything else is still how it was. To me it is disrespectful to damage anothers property on purpose or accident, without apologizing. It shows lack of respect. If a friend of mine did that, I would consider it a lack of respect. I treat people the way I want to be treated, so if they treat me with no respect, I'll do the same to them. I do agree that people come before cars, but if that person doesn't respect you or your personal belongings, then to me thay aren't much of a friend. Alon

BenzOnline.. nice to see ya again. Haven;t talked to you since I had to reformat my laptop
![]() I agree with you guys that people do come before objects. I will attempt to talk to my friend about the situation and explain how I feel about it. I also hate it when I give people rides and as soon as they step into the car they start "checking" out the buttons all around. Maybe I am just to cautious about the car.. or maybe I am right, either way... I would appreciate it if people would treat things nicely. I also get pi$$ed off when my other friend says stupid things about my car. When he heard that I am planning on spending so and so amount of money on a so and so part, or just making the car look better.. he goes on to say "why don't you just buy a new car?" |

TXBill, I have the same problem. When people slam my doors I go insane. Once on the side passenger door my friend slammed it and broke the lock (wouldnt unlock with key anymore). I banned him from the car for 2 months. He learned his lesson.
I now have a sheet of rules posted, 1 for each seat, if someone breaks them, they get banned, which is usually a big problem, as I'm the only one in my group with a car. |

This reminds me of a little something that happened to me in high school:
One friend wanted to drive my other friend's '90 BMW 325iX. The BMW owner refused, citing the first friend's lack of experience with a manual transmission on anything larger than a 125 cc motorcycle. So, the first friend demands "Sam, let me drive your (1983 Saab 900S 5-speed) car, and show me how to drive it, it's crappier than the BMW, it doesn't matter if something breaks." Me: "Are you f***ing kidding me!?". I then start my car and leave. Needless to say, he never sat in the driver's seat of any vehicle that I happened to have use of during high school. -Sam |

Yep, I have to agree with Alon as well...it's just a matter or respecting someone's property.
Everyone is different, and we can't expect everyone to share our obsession with MBs, or to even understand it, but we CAN expect common courtesty from our friends. I would calmly explain this principle of respect to him, and after that if he is still an *********, I would look for a new friend who respects me more. Just me 2 cents... Mike

Most of my friends normally treat the old girl with the respect she rightly deserves.Though I'm with Bill on my pet hate, merc doors don't have to be slammed that hard, and I wince every time it happens.Normally this act is carried out by my old lady, now there's one thing having a go at a friend but her!!!There are certain arguments that are just not worth getting into
![]() Trelinski the list is going a bit far.Better and far more effective idea, have you considered carrying a portable cattle prod. You could reach everyone from the drivers seat, and at least this way they'd feel some of your pain ![]() ![]() ![]()

Unfortunately, the front passenger door needs to be slammed on mine to close. I haven't yet looked into what is amiss since this only started a couple of weeks ago, and the car is currently a weekend driver.

Most people who had their first ride in my Benz definitely slammed the door shut. I mean.. it is a heavy and big door (the coupe). However after once or twice they know just how much effort they need to close the door.
I honestly never had anyone say that, not seriously at least. They know that I take care of it more than I take care of myself sometimes... :p Since there aren't that many buttons to play around with, except for the radio, they generally leave it alone. One thing that I'm usually pretty anal about is music. When I'm in a happy mood, I'd let people change whatever I have playing. However, normally I don't take it.

It goes way deeper than simple etiquette (sp?) or lack of appreciation for cars...It's a matter of respect for your fellow human, friend or not.
It doesn't matter if the car is a 23 year-old Mercedes, or a d**n 80 year old horse carraige! If THEY are asking ME for a ride, then they WILL respect me and my car, or it will be a very short ride. And their last ride in my car. Period. If you don't stand up for yourself, no one else will. Next time let the ********* walk. Another 2 cents worth... Mike
