The new Nokian WR D4

Nokian WR D4 - The world's first premium winter tyre for passenger cars that offers wet grip in the EU tyre label's best A class in many sizes. / Nokian Tyres

What do you think? My last set of Nokians were the WR A3

Nokian WR A3 - This non-studded tyre that is especially designed for high-performance cars guarantees a precise and sensitive steering feel even at high speeds. / Nokian Tyres

and these weren't as good in the snow as the original WRs which I also had.

I wonder though, since it's not on the website, whether they changed these so they're not really all season anymore. IOW can I or run these in the summer or not?

It looks like those are snow tires, not all-season like the WR G3's.

I put a set of WR G3's on my AWD/4WD Honda Crosstour. After 40k miles the tires felt like they had flatspots on them (you could feel and hear it while you were driving). The alignment was still spot-on and the tires were only 50% worn but they needed to be replaced after 40k miles. I will say that in the snow they were very good - ALMOST but not quite as good as a set of dedicated snows.

The Crosstour is gone now but I have decided to go back to the summer/winter tire strategy. For my sedans I like Yokohamas for the summer and General Altimax Artics for the winter. For my SUV I went with Yokohamas for the summer and Firestone Winterforce for snows (I had Winterforces on my last two Range Rovers and they were absolutely unstoppable in the snow).

I had the all season Nokian's on my 7-series. I think they were the WR A3's (?).

Anyhow, not particularly good at anything.

So now I run dedicated snows in the winter and decent summer tires when the snow isn't flying.

My tire guy called the Nokian's (the one's I had) "boutique tires".

I'm looking for dedicated snows for my Taurus SHO, but not a lot of choices for 245/45-20 outside of Blizzak LM-32's at over $300 a pop...

Why don't you just use a different rim and a different tire? You really need the height. Go buy some steel rims, unless you're vain of course. Still cost less than $1,200 for all four.
