Any experience with the Chevy truck V6?

Opportunity to get a great price on a 2012 Silverado work truck. Exactly what I need. Rubber floors, crank windows, 4WD with 30K miles. Perfect condition throughout. Only trouble is it has the V6 and makes me a little leery.

I know I know, never put a V6 in a full sized truck get a diesel what's wrong with you blah blah blah. I only pull a two horse trailer these days and not very far, a few miles to the arena where me and a few other geezers still try to rope steers, and have grown so old and soft my hay is delivered. Not going to work it very hard and my penile substitutes all go bang.

Any thoughts? Don't know a thing about this motor.

The 4.3 is bomb proof, just not very fast, it has plenty of torque though. Anything under 5k it should yank around just fine.

Fuel mileage will be horrible, 13ish around town maybe 20 on the highway.

Thanks. As an example, with no load will it maintain highway speeds on a 5-6 % grade?

had to look it up to satisfy my curiosity, as I could not believe the 4.3 was still in production in some form.

agree on thirsty, and will be fine on its own moving the truck

I just recently (last fall) sold a 99 4.3 Express van. It would tow a fully loaded car trailer, I got rid of it because the suspension was a bit light for a work van. No complaints on the motor, which was bulletproof as hatterasguy states

I dont think the motor will be a problem, but with a horse trailer I think the rear of the 1500 may be low. Worth looking into. You may have the same light suspension problems I had.

It should.

They kept the old 4.3 in production until 2013. The new one is a totally different engine, other than the same displacement they have nothing in common.

What kind of differential gearing did they put into the 4.3? Was it lower than the 5.3?

Doesn't that guy have a 14-year-old motorhome and a 10-year-old Mercedes?.

P.S.: 2016 - 2012 = 4, not 5...

I looked at two 2012s. One was 4WD and the other not. Both Chevy work trucks. The 2WD has a V8 and is actually rated mpg higher than the V6. 13/18 vs 14/21 I think. I don't know if that has more to do with the motors or the 4WD, maybe a bit of both.
Both trucks are lease returns and in near perfect condition. Around here everybody sneers at V6s in full sized trucks. I'm sure the dealer knows that. I think I can use it as a bargaining chip as he already has the V6 priced 3K lower than the V8. The truck drives out perfectly and has been on the lot several months.
