What's in air cleaners that look like mufflers?

I haven't seen but vague pictures of them. What's inside?

You might lookup that item on the parts less and see what they call it.

On the Detroit Diesels for marine use they have what appears to be an Air Filter but in fact it is an Air Silencer.

That thing circled in red is an Air Scilencer but it you would think it is a air filter.

I don't know, but it looks like a muffler. I don't think there will be any filtration in it. Looks like a jag 120, is it?

That's surely not original equipment on that Jag is it? I don't see how you'd get any filtration on that setup.

Clean air aside, I don't see any benefit besides muted backfires

It is an "air silencer". It may filter out nuts and bolts. Most replace them with an air filter, often K&N.
