Working On My Friend's car, first time working on another car.

I can honestly say i'm scared, but I'll do the job. The job isn't a burden to me, i'm excited to gain mechanical apptitude and enjoy working on cars, i'm just nervous. His cv drive axles are shot on his 2000 Nissan Altima. It's a straight forward repair, I'm doing it to save him money.

The shop charged 2x markup for the part, it costs $71, they wanted $143. I'm going to shop for tools tomorrow and get er done.

Any advice when working on someone's car?

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

Take your time and resolve any surprises as they arise. Most of all be safe.

Remember, working on friends cars for a reduced price is the good deed that typically spawns acute regret when in 2 months time, hes blaming you because his radio doesn't work.

Just keep that at the back of your mind as you do this job.

Funny this came up today. I'm going to be working on my friend's Explorer this afternoon but I'm doing it with him. He didn't feel comfortable doing the job alone so I'm loaning tools and expertise in car repair. Plus beer

If available, look up some YouTube repair vids on his car's issues to see if there are any items to watch out for.

That's good advice; I'm really surprised at the number of YouTube videos and how helpful they are. Before I do anything on my care that I haven't done before, I check for one of those videos.

The #1 cause of failure on the job is lack of confidence. No reason. That's a straight forward procedure on a very easy car to work on. Good luck!

Hopefully he's paying you even if he's your friend. Your time isn't free.

If I feel comfortable with the repair, I will help friends with their cars. We help each other. I do work for my sister. I don't get paid for these jobs since I am not a mechanic and I like the work. I wouldn't accept payment other than maybe beer or tools it takes to do the job.
