Towing starts

For about $15.00/$20.00 you can buy a battery charger. If that doesn't do the job, you probably really need a battery. Batteries are quite expensive now, but you can get a used battery also, it won't last as long but it will start. Tow starting is difficult even if the car is a good starter. It really takes about 40MPH and that is a fast tow. Keep the shifter in neutral, have the key on, remember steering and brakes will be hard and very hard without power assist. At 40 mph put it into drive gear and it will really suck up your power and speed and it will probably start. Not for the untrained! Practically speaking you don't have really any brakes at that time, so accidents can happen quickly!

These things are getting cheap. I can remember buying an engine about 25 years ago at a junkyard and they used one to start it. The guy said it was one of the most expensive items they owned.

Now you can buy them at Walmart.

I've got a $29 jump pack from costco that will fit in the glovebox.

Batteries are expensive but you can buy WalMart valuewhatever batteries for $49 brand new if you're in a pinch.

what year car are your driving? a 617-616 a nice feature is the car will continue to run without a battery as long as there is fuel.

otherwise a AA plan and a cell phone will get someone out there with a jump pack.

I have started my 123 in the boonies by putting it into 2nd when I was coasting down a hill. Took a little bit of time but it started! Glad I didn't have to do the tow rope.

There's this great hill in NM that I coasted down for 5 miles once, that would have been great for a jump start.

I think we need to be clear - if your car ISNT a W123 automatic trans - I'm not sure this trick will work. I've only ever seen these kinda instructions on the Mercedes W123 cars
