My Toxic Toilet!

So I share a small house and tiny bathroom with my brother, who has been (hopefully inadvertently) trying to gas me!
Now and then, he likes to pour a cup or two of bleach in the toilet - and leave it there without telling me.
Then, when I next pay a visit, I might add a cup or more of urine. Before I'm done, nasty fumes are already irritating my throat and eyes.
I think that uric acid and chlorine is causing chloramine gas.
He thinks there's not enough combined chemicals here to cause a reaction.
My throat and eyes disagree!
Opinions? Comments? Recommendations for a good gas-mask?

Happy Motoring, Mark

Ask him to look up what happens when you mix ammonia and bleach. There is some ammonia in urine.

For about a dollar you can order about 130 litmus strips. Delivered from Ebay. If you do not detect the presence of the bleach just drop a strip in before letting fly for a minute.

Or splurge and buy one of those old fashioned toilet bowl cleaners that hang on the edge of the bowl or go in the tank. There are at least several variations of them.

Not a good way to conserve water, that is unless after going you do not flush and let his bro get the chlorine gas when he dumps in the bleach.

Buy some of those cleaners which can be dropped into the toilet tank and turn the water blue. Perhaps that will give your BIL some confidence that the bowl is sanitary enough to meet his requirements...

If he wants to swamp out the toilet, fine. Tell him it's like shampoo, apply, rinse repeat. The rinsing part is vitally important for the bleach to do its job.

I bought a house where after the owners died a sister insisted on scrubbing everything with bleach, including the sidewalk outside. She did it once a week while the house was on the market for 6 months. Dunno how many potential buyers the stench scared off, but once we painted and redid the interior floors, it was ok. The sidewalk took about 2 years of rain to quell the reek.

I have to applaud your sister though, the commitment alone is very impressive.

I'm tired of inhaling fumes. I think it's time to confiscate the bleach!

Too much bleach screws up a septic system, if that's a consideration.

No septic to screw up here. Just my throat & eyes!
