The sound I remember is different from the one in the video. The river near where I lived growing up (Rock River in Illinois) got significant ice every year but it was seldom "safe" enough to walk on as it was not very thick. We walked on it anyway. Often when we walked out 20 or more feet from shore, the ice would suddenly get a huge 30 foot or longer crack. When the ice cracked, there would be a huge sound like a really loud rifle shot or the crack of a bull whip. When we heard that sound, we had achieved our purpose in going out on the ice.

Because of the flowing water the ice on a river may look equal in thickness from above but can have cavities under it from the eroding effect of the moving water. River ice is very unsafe to be on.
This guy skating on the black ice is fascinating to watch. I'd not want to get on it myself but I can see how it would be exciting and pleasurable to do so.

Wow .
I remember falling through the ice in 1962 or so, it was very frightening, all the others ran off and I had to extricate my self and walk about 1/4 mile to the house, I was blue by the time I got inside . We had lakes a plenty in New Hampshire and every so often one kid would walk near the thinner part where the water was flowing out and fall in . This looks interesting but too dangerous to me . The sounds are neat ~ I too remember the loud CRACK of the ice fracturing .
