The only way a high school kid could do it is if he has discovered some fundamental flaw in the theory surrounding nuclear science.

Fusion isn't all that hard to achieve. Continuous, over unity fusion is what isn't possible yet. I was wondering where he would have found deuterium, but I suppose you could obtain a minute amount of tritium from a glow in the dark watch or tv remote.

I'd say it is fake news.
