Same with C-130's (Hercules), flew about ½ way around the planet in one, with ALL equipment we needed to fix our RF-4C's, (EST-B=enroute support team B) enroute from Bergstrom AFB to Udorn Thailand. Took 5 days, , , , no fun at all. edit = 5 days, and 5 nights |
Yeah I spent LOTS of time as a passenger in C130’s. I think the flight engineer couldn’t hear everything well enough from up front such that he could sync the engines. They warbled like crazy on virtually every flight I was on.
I have never ridden as a passenger in a DC3, so I can’t comment on that experience. I can tell you for sure that it is a wonderful flying aircraft when sitting at the controls. |
Please elaborate on syncing the engines..

Two signals of the same amplitude and slightly different frequencies added together to make a signal of oscillating amplitude... and it's annoying as Hell. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_(acoustics) |
But it does not save fuel to synchronize? ...just your patience?

The older C-130's had 3 bladed props, they were absolutely the worst. would not stay in sync. Ended up changing the fleet to 4 blade props.
C-47's dont have windows, as opposed to DC-3's, , , , |

Good question. When you throw constant speed props in the equation as well. |
What bums me out is we lived 1.5 hours away from the Reno Air Races and I couldn't go because we were moving in one year and out the next year.

I have always enjoyed watching city drivers try and turn city streets into the autobahn. Light turns green and they light up the tires and speed shift up to 80 MPH as quickly as possible. Next red traffic light, a short one mile later they appear to hit the binders the last possible second.
Rinse wash repeat. All I can say is the tire, brake and transmission shops have gotta love these suicidal drivers!!!:D:D |
Autoputzer describes it pretty well. There is no appreciable fuel saving involved. If they are warbling it will have a few people that will be ready to jump out parachute or no parachute. The rear seats in an MD80 or DC9 make for the same irritant. I was on a red eye flight once in the back row and it irritated a guy so much that he started angrily pacing the aisle until the stewardess found someone up front that agreed to trade seats.

The food is delicious, the architecture is very cool and the people were incredibly gracious and nice. |
The main difference between the DC3/C41 and a C47 is the door. The C47 has a much larger door to facilitate loading bulky cargo.

My family returned from Colombia on a DC-3 in 1957 or so.
I flew to Argentina in a Bolivian C-130 in 1982, iirc. |
