Opel GT

Yesterday I saw a guy on the side of the street tinkering with an Opel GT. I cannot remember last time I stopped to look at a car like this. I said hello and that I wanted to look at his car. He was on the ground half under it but said ok.

I looked it over pretty well. It appears to be pretty complete and original but looking a bit sad. The paint is faded and bumpers rusty and bits of rust here and there, though it looked pretty solid. I did not look under it. The engine is original with the correct GT valve cover. The roll away headlights appeared to possibly be functional. They were at least not stuck in the up position.

It had lots of third world style repairs that you would see on a car that is hard to get original parts for. Some wires hanging out of the dash to work switches that were not original and such. It had its original seats which I imagine are hard to come by. he said he has had it a good long time, around 20 years. We agreed that it had a lot of Ferrari Dino in the design.

I gave him my name and phone number. He said he'd put it in his buyer file.

Fun!

Fun!
I love those GTs, the old poor man's corvette! Unfortunately most of them are completely rotted out at this point. I dont think I have seen an unrestored one with its floorboards.

Fun fact, the Saturn Sky was badged and marketed as the Opel GT in Europe.

Having driven one back in the day, I recall these as fun little cars, not terribly powerful, but nice handling. I always got a kick out of the big console mounted handle used to roll the headlights open and closed.

Ferrariesque, Corvetteesque, though the corvette of that era was a blatant ripoff of the 64 GTO. The minimal bumpers ape Ferrari, corvette and many other sports cars of that era.

Cool car...saw one last month sitting in Ormond Beach FL.

Family had a '68 Kadett Rally (sp?) Had the two tone paint job redone at Earl Scheib for $39.95. The two tone was $10 extra. Great looking with gauges manual transmission. 13" tires IIRC.

Made the mistake of trying to keep up with Dad's '65 Galaxie that was always in top tune...the Opel saw Galaxie taillights and exhaust pipe until they passed the horizon.

Post Buick / Opel GT

I remember these .

In the late 1980's there was a brief surge of interest in them and I was finding them in junkyards for a friend who would add body stiffening rails then cut the tops off and modify FIAT rag tops to suit, then ship them to Germany where they got amazing $ .

IIRC the original engine was small, only 1700 CC's .

At the time of conversions you could buy brandy new 2 liter crate engines from Opel in Germany....

Fun cars, I remember when new yanking the headlight lever with all my might to make them pop up .
