Toy cars can kill you.....

Recently, actress Anne Heche crashed her Mini-Cooper into a house. The accident has resulted in her death....sad. Six teenage girls in Tishomingo, Oklahoma died in a car crash while they were traveling in a Chevrolet Spark, another toy car.

A few years back, I received a newsletter from my auto insurance company. It said in every accident involving two ore more cars, SUVs or trucks, the people in the heavier car, SUV or truck end up with less injuries than the pepole in the lighter car, SUV or truck.

Anne Heche's accident doesn't make any logical sense. Either the car's throttle system malfunctioned (the neighbor saw her car blow through three intersections just prior to the crash....) or she malfunctioned.

After watching more than a few Quest Channel "Maydays" there appears to be the possibility that ANY electronic/computerized system can malfunction. It is said that newer Mercedes Benz automobiles have 100 computer systems. Drive-by-wire, brake-by-wire and throttle-by-wire which brings the question; is it possible for a car's throttle-by-wire AKA Electroic Throttile Controle to malfunction and lock at WIDE OPEN THROTTLE?

If so, the National Transportaiton Safety Board can add this "problem" to its need to investigate list......

Or you could just use facts to determine safety and you would find that size does not dictate safety.

https://youtu.be/qBDyeWofcLY

Wife got hit by a full size GMC pick up at about 45-50 mph. The car sacrificed itself and saved her.

The nearly 20 yr old 220 is likely far less safe than a newer and smaller car due to advances in crash protection, exotic metal use/design....etc.

I would rather be in a 2nd gen Mini than a 55 Chevy if I get in an accident. As the video above clearly shows, you are far more likely to walk away in a new car than an older one.

I used to be into VW's but as I got older I did not feel very secure. Nothing but hard, metal surfaces all around surrounded by not much mass.

Safety did not sell. Volkswagen has generally had a very strong passenger compartment. They were basically double bodied.

Nothing is perfect; that said let me suggest those on this forum who have a ROKU hooked up to their televisions to check out the Quest Channel's "Mayday" series. Talk about computer system eff ups......

Computers belong on your desk, not in your car.....

I am not double bodied. Just did not get the secure feeling in a VW any more.
As I get older I am taking less and less risks. I used to work under vehicles and not give safety a lot of thought. Now I want 2 or 3 layers of redundancy in what ever is supporting the vehicle. Maybe it's all the reality TV shows we are watching.
I guess one's prespective changes with age.

Older car accidents.

https://youtu.be/uFQkRpeC294

the '59 Bel Air accident is just messed up.

The very last accident with a truck hitting two stopped cars is disturbing.

I’m not 100 percent convinced that those accidents are the speeds they say they are. I’ve had a lot of old cars from the 50s up. Smashed a few one was even at 65 mph (67 Chevelle) and the car didn’t even come close to crumpling like the bel air. Walked away with some cuts from the glass. Thinking they sped up the speeds to like 100mph then calling it 60mph

There are quite a few videos out there that show the same thing. I think it us unlikely that they are all fudging the numbers.

Ive seen that 59 crash before. That was a rusted bucket. You can see rust flying in some of the angles.
