Any experience with trying to help a drug user that's a bit mental?

About twice a day, most days, we pass by a house owned by a woman with a sad history.

Moved to Texas about 20 years ago after having brain surgery and a divorce.

Raised one son who is doing quite well, but doesn't see mother very often.

Seven years ago she started to use drugs and has continued to go downhill since. Now lives in squalor, water shut off, functional druggies live in boats and RV's on her small property, almost every square foot of her property has trash, old furniture, trashed small boats on trailers........ No driver license, bank won't issue any more debit cards due to claims of stolen,

Out of any city limits so no city involvement

She received notice of foreclosure on her $100,000 property saying she owes less than $700 to Morgan Chase.

Is there any hope/help for her from any government/private group? Her folks live 750 miles away & are in their 80's with limited funds. Son has washed his hands of her due to verbal abuse after he paid her property tax.

I don’t have an answer for your specific question. I suspect it would take a devoted advocate to pull it off for her. Absolutely not trying to be snarky, you might be that person.

I think the case to make is that the investment of several thousand in government funds to ameliorate near certain crash and burn of several marginal but contained households could result in avoiding greater cost/liability to the county.

There would need to be strict terms. Such as cooperating and working with garbage removal teams. Plumbing and sanitation assets would need to be looked out, possibly refurbished.

What I am suggesting is the possible good side of liberalism. Let all of those people know that the cost of retaining their home, such as it is, is that they dramatically improve the overall health and vitality of their compound.

You can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves. There is probably a reason her family has given up. If you talk to her and are friendly, I would suggest social health and addiction programs -- give her the info and leave it up to her to take the step to get better.

Basically getting involved as little as possible. Two guys in the neighborhood are trying to buy her property for about 1/3 of it's potential value ( near lakefront on big recreational lake ). So that's the reason I'm involved, hoping to avoid that. My problem is I'd like her and her druggies gone, so it is tempting to just let them buy it. But don't want them for neighbors either due to their trying to take advantage of her.

Her son paid her property taxes. She accuses him of trying to steal her home.

Her parents would like to help but being in their 80's and 750 miles away it is difficult for them. I met them before she got hooked on drugs. Very nice people. They, as I am, are a bit afraid of the ' shady/scary ' druggies that are on the premises and that stop by. They literally crawl out of the derelict boats and RV's parked in the yard. Today I saw two new ones, male and female, that I hadn't seen before.

One of my clients also turned her sons away from her. She divorced her husband years ago, has nothing but harsh things to say about him, I suspect she badmouth him to her boys, and they got tired of it. I suspect this because she runs them down right and left.

I should’ve said former client, I can’t handle her toxicity.

It is absolutely true that it’s hard to help people who don’t want to help themselves. I’m just wondering if maybe they realized they were about to be put out on the street in a big way they were sober up, literally and metaphorically.

Found out today she's potentially going to come into about $450,000 from insurance proceeds, land sale, and value of her residence lots.

I've counted seven ' homeless ' type functioning drug users that live on her four lots.

That amount of money would be run through pretty quickly.

Only hope for her now is to get the government involved in controlling the funds and using them to provide for shelter, food, and medical care.

I'll keep trying to talk with the mortgage company to prevent foreclosure due to the small amount she has due ( > $700.00 ) in back monthly payments.

I recommend just staying as far away as possible. Sometimes you just gotta let things run their course. People that are spun out have no touch with reality. Becoming more friendly might get you caught up in her drama

Currently trying to prevent foreclosure on one property due to less than $700 owed.

Also, checking to see what help is available from government and her family.

In Texas, it will require a medical evaluation, hopefully requested by a family member.

I'm guessing there are so many ' mental / drug user / homeless ' people that it is for too costly in funds and people's time for the government to intervene unless absolutely proven necessary.

In our rural area of the county and probably all of Texas it seems to take a criminal act or judicial order to take someone's freedom of choice away. Doesn't matter the amount of squalor, lack of water, or number of homeless on private property with permission from property owner.

Only real hope for her is a ' mental evaluation ' that results in a ' guardian ' being appointed. Hopefully that will happen

Do a search for the Grayson Country Crisis Center. If they can't help it is likely they will know someone who can.

I tried a few years back. with no success. I should have known better, as I too, was caught up in the hippy drugs. For me in 1985, I got sick and tired of being sick and tired. Sleeping under bridges, just what was in my pack. I quit it all.
No one can help you accept yourself.

Post Helping Hands

I agree that you must want help before any change can occur but I also know that many times people need some help to make life changes .

I too have tried and many more times I've watched people I know and care about go down the drug rabbit hole never to get out .

Remember : drinking or smoking your self to death are drug addictions too .

The drama continues.

This morning when we passed by her property, I recognized the car driven by the man trying to buy her property was parked in front. Seemed to early to be doing business.

Stopped, went in, and found the guy was there to take her to get ID so he could do the real estate deal. He's scared her in a possibly successful attempt to sign over her ownership in the two properties that have very little owed. One is free and clear, she owns half interest in that, it's estimated to be worth over $500,000. Her shabby house lots are ' lake view ' and with the house torn down the lots are worth over $200,000. He's made an offer of $70,000 and I'm assuming her little mortgage debt would be paid out of that.

He keeps telling her she will lose everything if he doesn't purchase them quickly.

I'm hitting a brick wall in getting help from any government agency including the sheriff department. Even though the guy is using extreme duress to frighten her into signing papers, they will not get involved unless she requests it. I'm an eye witness and have recordings of him telling her the lies.

Tried three family law places today. None returned phone calls.

Now I'm beginning to think the guy trying to buy the property is involved in drugs also. His girl friend looks like a druggie, very skinny, and a little mental. She was in the house telling the woman that everything was going to be Ok, that they could be trusted.

I did call the sheriff's department but they would only take a verbal report.
