Windshield repair

Do windshield glass repair companies use the original glass with the MB logos or do we have to take it to the dealer shop?

I have had a few replaced over the years and have yet to have MB glass replaced. Its been a while since the last one but as I recall the price diff was staggering. The replacement glass had the black out striping around it and the cut outs in the right place got the sensors and vin.

' replacement ' I never did a benz, that bulletproof stuff never breaks !!! I'd guess you could spec anything to the firm doing the work, but your insurance might not be on board. On a newish ride I would expect original parts or you have not been made whole. I have had insurance companies try to cheap out and always hold their feet to the fire. Once they wanted to replace a large aluminum front bumper backer with steel. ( GM N frame ) Shop guy made me wise and we had to go around with the argument about the weight difference not meeting the chassis design for springs, shocks, handling, steering, ground clearance & what not making it unsafe too drive. Were they planning on insuring that?

I recently replaced one for a Subaru, the glass place gave me a choice of OE or aftermarket. My insurance approved the OE so that’s what I got. It looks exactly like the original but the auto glass guy told me glass is glass for what it’s worth.

I think that the OE windshields have to be more carefully made, as glass distortion would play havoc with the lane keeping assist cameras which have to see through the windshield...

Getting the cameras re-calibrated cost more than the aftermarket windshield!

I got a quote from a good Mercedes shop in LA for my W126, $420 for the glass (non MB) and installation. This was before the tariffs, so it might be more expensive now. The owner of the shop said the quality is less than original MB, but beats the 30 year old pitted glass and make nighttime driving less of a headache for the old eyes.

You know what’s strange? Companies fulfilling their promise.

So Country Financial, the insurance carrier, was a breeze to deal with. My wife called them and they just asked where we would be taking it. Then they called the body shop and set it up with the shop, then the shop called to let us know they would call or contact us with a number of possible appointments options.

Huh, crazy. Unheard off even. Our previous company was Metlife and they were a pain.
