Question MBZ'er's PM to me....

The BANISHED MBZ'er sent me a private message, but the email notification said the message was from JCE. Now, I KNOW that MBZ'er is not anyway related to JCE, because JCE is a nice, kind gentleman and MBZ'er is not, but, technically speaking, does anyone know how I could get an email notification saying the PM is from one man, and then have the PM actually be from someone else?

Hi Amanda,

Welcome to mercedesshop! For a new user you know the crowd well. I'm guessing you were reading for a while?

if you can figure out someone’s password you can use their account. Having their password haaked has happened to a few folks here.

But what I wanna know is who MBZ’er really was? Any guesses???

Yes Tracy I have beed reading for a very long time, and just decided to register a few days back. I have a good idea who MBZ'er really is, in fact I am almost certain, but I really wouldn't want to say in public. You're welcome to PM me if you'd like more info.

Thanks, Amanda.

Actually I have a pretty good idea too from the writing style. Lets just say that it's someone with some, um, anger issues.....

Regards

Amanda, did you read the private message?

Could you tell if it was really from John (JCE), or was it a foul, profrane, offensive private message?

The banished one has been to known to send offensive private messages...

Suginami yes I did read it and he made some nasty aspersions regarding my age. While a true lady never reveals her age or her natural hair color, I'm not really a true lady, so I put 1965 in the year of my birthdate on my profile. MBZ'er asked if I really meant to put 1865. So, yes, his message was foul, profane, and offensive.

I just can't believe someone who just came on board here has already gotten such a message, whatever it was(sounds bad). The rest of us welcome you!

the email notification only sends you to your inbox and not to a specific message. it's possible that JCE sent you a message then cancelled it leaving a previous message(?) from MBZ'er, but then you would also have received a notification about a note from MBZ'er.

just thinking out loud about how it could have happened - doesn't sound like a hack, maybe a quirk of the PM system.

one absolute way to verify that the notification was generated by the system is to examine the mail headers because it is possible to spoof the "from" field but not the "X-" fields. just right click on the message in outlook express and select properties, details. the system generated mail has "X-antiabuse" fields at the bottom that point to mercedesshop.

Man, I didn't get any of the technical jargon, but John Elliot (JCE) e-mailed me privately, and he said he didn't send it.

BTW, John is one of the earliest members of this site, is a retired University Physics professor, and is the creator of the Sportline W124 upgrade w/ photo's in the DIY link.

Joe I think it was a quirk of the system, possibly having to do with MBZ'er being banned from the forum at close to the same time the PM was sent. I did not get any other PM notifications in my email, just his. It was truly wonderful to see that I got a PM from JCE, and then, can you imagine the utter dissappointment when the message was actually from the MBZ'er character? I was fit to be tied.

Nobody move I figured out the reason why it happened. Thanks Alon but please, don't look any further the problem has been fixed, it was all my fault for being a newbie like I am you know. Toodles.

the last "jargon filled" paragraph (sorry, i'm guilty as charged) is a good technique to learn. hidden in emails is a lot of information that can be used to track down miscreants or to solve problems such as those worms that pretend to originate from someone else. maybe amanda can forward the email to me.

cheers

ps. and of course i know who John is - i used his DIY guide to install my head unit last year
