The Ultimate North American Road Trip

For several years, I have been thinking that one of these years I will forget about teaching Summer Session and take the ultimate North American Road Trip: Miami to Fairbanks via the Alaska Highway. I have beeen considering this since it was called the Alcan Road.

Has anyone had any experience with this route? I am assuming that Diesel will be available every 300 miles or so. Naturaly I will drive either the 1990 sedan or the 85 wagon. The sedan gets better mileage, but has less space.

It's a great trip. We made the 10,000 mile round trip in 3 weeks. Search the bookstore for a book called the Milepost. It's published annually. That should answer most of your questions about the drive. Plenty of trucks running around, so diesel is no problem. (We had a Peugeot 504D). There were some stretches where towns were 150 miles apart or so.

I find a lot of people are concerned about finding diesel all over the world. All those trucks use diesel and its everywhere. I had a 220D in 1980 and never had a problem finding diesel.

Look at Jim Rogers article about driving a 300SLK diesel all around the world.
