Question Has Anyone Ever Heard Of This

1998 E300TD. with 75,500 miles. I'am driving down a fairly rough road, a lot of tar repairs, when I started to hear/feel a pounding noise coming from the drivers front. I begin to think that I'm starting to hear what has been talked about on this web site(bad front bushing). the noise is only heard on any imprefection in the road, good road no noise. I pulled the car over, looked for any damage, under hood and in wheel well. I could not see anything wrong so I drove the car home.pulled the wheel and saw that the bracket(holder) that holdes the top of the coil spring is torn about half way off where it is welded to the frame. The spring is lodged up between the inside fender and the shock absorber. It appears that some of the torn metal has been that way for awhile and must have just torn some more so that the bracket was now rubbing the shock. Has anyone heard of this happening.
