Goering became an early high ranking party official. He was hitler's designated successor until he fell out of favor late in the war. He was convicted of war crimes at the nuremberg trials and sentenced to death by hanging. Goering committed suicide with a cyanide capsule on the night he was to be hanged (october 15, 1946).
