Dear friends:

I had never have experience with all kinds of labor tools before getting hooked on MB cars. English is also my ESL, so I'm kind of confused of the names and functions/purposes of these tools. Please give me some ideas of what a listed tool does. The ones marked with an asterisk are what I have a pretty clear understanding of what it is and what it does, but please also give them some description if you want.

1) Polisher*:

5) Die Grinder

9) Dremel tool (Is it a brand-name die grinder?):

9) dremel is the name brand... its a tool that serves multiple uses. Its similar to that of a dental tool used in making and cleaning dentures. The dremel can be used to cut, saw and polish.

5) router... I believe this is a wood-shop tool. I think its used to trim the sides of boards when constructing furniture for example.

The main difference between a polisher and a buffer is motor speed. A polisher has a bit more horsepower for cutting paint and removing scratches and swirl marks. Body shops do this as a finish step after painting.

Most household units are considered buffers. The speed and horsepower won't cause paint burns from improper use, but a polisher can do damage if not used correctly.

Actually, if you can sit through one or two episodes of "New Yankee Workshop" with Norm Abrams, he will probably use 80-90% of the tools you've listed in most of his projects...a great way to find out what purpose each serves.

1) Polisher*: puts polish on and can be used to buff with a buff wheel

2) Buffer (what's it different from polisher?) can be used to apply polish, but usually just buffs.

3) Sander*: you have beltsanders and random orbital.

4) Angle Grinder*:

5) Die Grinder: a small handheld, usually pnuematic, tool like a dremel.

6) Bench Grinder: a table mount grinder with usually 2 wheels...one coarse, one fine. used to sharpen saw blades, etc.

7) Router: a fine wood working tool that has a rotary elec. motor. You have a choice of 100's of bits to do dovetails, chamfer, ogees, radiuses, flutes, mortises, etc.

8) Plunge Router is the same as above but the bit is not onserted into the work piece till you push down.

9) Dremel tool (Is it a brand-name die grinder?): Electric

10) Chuck Key Eliminator: what holds a drill bit in a drill and you can use your hands to tighten or loosen the bit.

11) Flaring tool creates a flare or beveled hole.

12) Planer used to quickly take bits of wood of of long pieces, also used to square up wood for cabinet/furniture making.

13) Wood Lathe use to turn square stock into turning like table legs

14) Rotary tool like a dremel, but used to cut drywall, laminate, etc.

Now describe "beveled hole"
