Parking Ticket

Well.. Ohio State has already raised tuition this year by 12%... and still feel that they should make more money off students by fining them with stupid tickets. A few days ago I had an appointment with my College Advisor. Well, Ohio State is not a small school... I believe it the 2nd biggest campus in the nation. So i drive all over to find a place to park. I finally found a place and parked there. I walked 3 blocks to my advisor's building and spent roughly an hour sorting papers and scheduling classes. I get home... my friend comes over and we were heading out some place. He notices a slip under my window wiper and takes it. He shows it to me its a parking ticket issued by the Ohio State police. I was fined $30 for parking in a faculty spot!? Now... I am not a stupid person to do that or park in a handicap spot... so I didn't believe the claim. I drove back to the place and sure enough.. THERE IS NO SIGN STATING ANYTHING... but on the other side, each spot clearly has a sign infront stating its a faculty spot. However the place where I parked had no sign or warnings! So I drive up further and about 100ft ahead from the place where I parked, there was a small sign saying "faculty" spot. But this sign cannot be seen from where I parked! Its even over a hill!!! Even though $30 is not much... I will refuse to pay them anymore. I will keep my $30 to fill my tank up.

Ok.. thanks for the time to let me vent:p

A year ago when I transferred to Cal Poly SLO, I got ticketed for the same bs. There was a row of student parking, and then faculty. I parked in faculty, thinking it was student. Turns out the word "Staff" was there, but it was old and you couldn't read it.

I contested it, told them it was their fault that their freaking maintenance guy didnt paint the stuff right, and not my fault.

They let go, and I Didn't have to pay

They count on you not contesting it. Take pics and plead your case. Read the law, or regulation. Come up with a good excuse.

Be respectful and wear an suit and tie. Make sure your shoes are also polished. Talk politely to the judge or adjuticator.

BTW, you cannot ignore it, fines increase and it can be very difficult for you.

BTW, there is usually a procedure for getting a temporary parking permit. Next time, ask at the Cop Shop.

Hey.. I have 5 pictures (different sides and angles) of where I parked and you can see clearly that there were no visible signs saying anything. Apparently, the University police is different than the city police in that all I have to do is fill out a form as to why I am appealing and they will mail me a statement with their decision in a week or 2. I came in dresses up for nothing. By the way.. they're just university police... do they have the power to arrest you for not paying a fine or have a search warrant? Universities are such a pain to find a spot to park. Oh well.. if I do get a statement saying i must pay.... the university will get a letter from my lawyer friend. I don't mind paying the fine if I truely was at fault. Meaning the sign was infront of me, clear and I decided not to obey it. However this was not the car...

I'm guessing here, but if it's the University police, they may not arrest you, but simply refer your case to the dean's office who will deny your degree until all such obligations are met.

Hopefully, common sense will prevail and they'll see that this wasn't a wanton disregard of authority and clear you of any misdeed.

I had a personal experience with university police. At Champaign-Urbana during the summer - around this time of year - I went back to return a book to the library. Things were very slow at the time and there were very few cars in any parking lot. I drove down only to find all the parking spots were "permit only". I took a chance since I was only returning a book and it wouldn't take long. After three minutes I came out and saw a parking ticket on the windshield with no police in sight! Considering all the writing on the ticket they must have started filling out the ticket before I pulled into the spot! Talk about aggressive enforcement!

Well there goes a misconcept.

University Police can arrest you, can do search warrants, anything.

What they will usually do, is, if you don't pay your fine(s) they will put a boot on your car, and notify DMV, so when you try to register your car for the year, they won't let you unless you pay the fines off. Who knows, it could also yield to an arrest warrant?

Say whaaaat? Arrest warrant??? Thats crazy. Anyways... I already filed my appeal, and all I have to do is sit back and wait for a responce. I am not sweating it because I know I am right in this case. My speeding ticket back in late March or April on the other hand is a different story. :p

Well.. I got a responce. It said that I the appeal is "denied but penalty waived". Hmmm... I guess Ohio State has a hard time accepting the blame in this case. So basically I am not paying the fine.. but am guilty of the "crime". go figure
