Unhappy Why does my Mercedes stink?

I've got a problem with my Mercedes. The interior smells really bad. I sort of noticed it when I purchased it a little over a year ago, but I thought airing it out over time would take care of it. It didn't. I think it's the leather seats. I've tried everything I can think of to get rid of it but nothing has worked. It's to the point that I'm actually thinking about trading it in towards a different Mercedes. Can somebody please help me? Thank you very much.

An unpleasant task, but can you "sniff around" and isolate it to a specific seat or area? If so, there are some products sold in pet stores to eliminate cat odors (urine, vomite, etc.) and they actually work good on fabric. If the seats have small air perforations in them like mine do, maybe it would penetrate and get rid of the odor. Definitely want to try first on an inconspicuous place. Last resort, if you really like the car, take the seats out and put them somewhere away from the car. Does it still stink? If so, replace the seat(s).:p

Also try posting this question to the Detailing part of the forum. You may get better results.

PS Have you tried deodorant?? Sorry, had to ask that!

Also make sure you've checked out the trunk. You never know if something is under the mat and the smell's making it into the cab.

Pull out the rear seat cushion and see what sorts of "delights" you find there. On one of mine I found french fries, and change, on another a bunch of doghair that was the cause of odors. Another one actually had dried up crusty maggots under the rear seat (boy that was gross!) .. apparently they had kids, and they must have spilled enough food to make it worthwhile for some critters to breed.

If you think its your a/c...turn it on until it gets cold, and then turn off the a/c...the coils will have picked up moisture and mixed with what's on them, and the air flowing across it, will give you a whiff.

Good luck!

If the car was left in storage for some time, critters can crawl up into the ducts...and DIE!

That makes for an odiferous interior!

Air conditioner condensor drain hoses get clogged and will soak the right floor and milldew. Usually very noticeable though. Someone suggested critters, check out the top of the intake for dead mice, chipmunks, squirels etc. (take the aircleaner off)
Take the seats out and try to isolate the smell. Spray Lysol into the air vents while on recirculate if you think it could be there. What kind of car?

Shouldn't be hard to fix

Assuming that you have looked for most of the issues above and have removed any offensive rotting food animals... whatever...

Rent an Ozone Generator and run it in your car with it closed up (windows sunroof) for 4 hours. This will kill any odor causing bacteria in your car. The ozone generator "burns" all the oxygen out of the air depriving the bacteria of its necessary food thereby killing it. This has been effective in my flooded basement (after it was dried of course) and I was told its worked on sump overflow, and cigarette smoke. Remember though, you have to eliminate whatever introduced the bacteria in the first place as well.
