Barber Shops

Why is it that finding a good barber is almost as hard as finding a good mechanic? I always see two extremes... a bad haircut for $7 or decent/good for $30. What do you guys usually pay at the barbershop and how good of a cut would you rate it?

p.s. eric... I know you use a dog clipper, so no need to post that you don't pay anything:p ;)

Heck, we've all gone to dog clippers ever since we found out from Eric it drives the babes nuts!

It depends on the cut. Mine is a clipper cut, 0 on the sides fading to 2 on the top and a little longer in the front. I've found an old fashioned (men only!) barber shop in St. Pete where I can let any barber in the place cut my hair. Some are better than others, but even the worst is acceptable. They charge $11. When in Ft. Lauderdale I use a similar shop (Joe's at the Hub Plaza) where all the barbers are excellent. They charge $16.

For shorter, more traditional cuts, you can't beat a barber shop. For longer styles, a salon is better but you have to be prepared to pay more.

Ack... I shoveled out $23 for my cut and eyebrow wax last time. I see the same person for everything though... so he sees quite a bit of my money, but I come out lookin damn good.

I use the ol' clippers on my head....

I used to play the stylist game when I had my "big 80's" hair. When it started to fall out I tried to find a suitable way to do it but to no avail, I found the clippers. got mad and did it. Now I wished I did it years ago. Long hair is cool, but it's too much work for the like of me now- the older you get the less it matters.

I have 1 eyebrow that I have to make into 2. In the culture in which I am in due to my sexuality, looks are unfortunately rather important, so you have to keep on top of this stuff.

I pay $11 for the cut and a couple $$ for tip. I use a regular barber, the kind where you just say - a long Marine cut, or Air Winger. Comes out just right every time - a little skin showing along the sides with just enough on top left to lay flat. That usually gives me a month to month and a hlf before it close to touching my collar or ears. In fact right now it is 4 1/2 weeks and I'm due to visit again.

Best part about my barber is he holds a Monday night football shop, where the shop is open and cutting hair until the game is over. Food and adult beverage for the adult patrons. First time I did the Monday night thing my wife thought I was full of it when I left the house at almost 8 pm, saying I was getting my hair cut.

im lucky i guess...my sister cuts hair in a salon, and she always cuts mine for free...but i always have to be on gaurd when i walk in the shop...its like being an american and walking into baghdad,iraq...enemy territory....the other girls in there are always wanting to wax this or pluck that, not to mention the man-hating that goes on in there...i just try to get my ears lowered, and get the hell out of there....thats right,it takes a real man to go into an all womens salon and still come out looking like a man....

im so damn cheap that when i was about 16,i shaved my head and bought a set of clippers...i had a shaved head up until about 2 yrs ago,so 5 years with a completely shaved head...the only reason i grew any back was because my sister got out of cosmetology school and started cutting hair,so now i get em for free...but the girls did love the shaved head, they always liked to rub it

When I bought a townhouse in the Vienna Va. area in 1981, I found a barber in town. It was run by some Greeks and they did a very nice job. The place was always crowded on Saturday morning and the cost was reasonable. Later, it was taken over by a Vietnamese man who brought in his own staff and he kept some from the previous owners. They were very nice and did a fine job of cutting my hair. As time went on, the price kept increasing but I had less hair. I always thought that odd since the barber spent less time with me and I still got charged the same.

We moved to Colorado Springs in 1993 and never found a barber to my liking. After 18 months we all moved back to Northern Va., so I went back to my old barber in Vienna. Five months later, we moved to a new house about 20 miles away and I looked for a local barber. I tried one in the area but he chewed tobacco and spit it out into a trash can. That was a turn off, for me at least. I tried another one but the woman use the larger slower clipper that was so loud it hurt my ears. When I complained, she claimed ignorance but wouldn't switch to the smaller buzz style clipper. Even sticking my finger in my ear didn't help. The also had a large TV playing a sports channel, not my bag either. I tried another one but it was rather dirty. I didn't go back. I really don't like going to the places by wife and kids go, not my bag either.

So it's back to my old trusty barber in Vienna. They treat me nicely, are happy to see me, the women are beautiful and they have nice pics on the wall of Vietnam. No, I never went, my draft number was 344.

I was in a week ago and I spoke to a man who was getting his hair cut and he does the same thing I do. He lives a mile from me but he goes to the same barber, 20 miles away.

Like me, he used to have the wave, now he has the beach!

That's ironic...I went the exact opposite way, for the exact same reason. The only difference is I don't have to worry about shaving my head every month or whatnot...the only thing I have to do is comb my hair back and put a rubber band in and call it good for the day. :)

I haven't been in a barbershop since I was 15 or so, and haven't looked back...the hair can get in the way, but not having to worry about getting a haircut's worth it for me. Besides, going by the record on my mom's side of the family, I need to enjoy my hair while I still have it... It's already stopped growing (in fact, it stopped about 2 years after it was last cut, and has just stayed steady where it is)...

I'm sorry for you.
I saw that for the first time on that show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", which I love BTW. They took a guy in for a haircut, and they waxed his eyebrow(s). I knew women did that, but that was the first time I found out guys do it. I think it's silly myself. And I don't see why it's more important to "your culture" than it would be to the rest of us. But hey, if you like it, have at it.

Gay men tend to be superficial. Actually, the place I go to is a men's salon, and they wax everything there.. and it is funny to hear guys cry out in pain from getting... stuff waxed.. lol
The eyebrows don't hurt nearly as much as your back though... yeowch.
