Like it says, Anyone know how to train a cat to use a toilet?

I'm sick of cleaning up after my cat. Dont want to buy a book. Perhaps someone here can help.

Had a friend who had an extra toilet in her basement. She put the litter box up there for a while to get the cat used to it, but never figgured out how to switch to just the toilet.
They sell fancy self cleaning cat boxes... not the same I know...

Tie a 20lb lead weight to it's tail and place it in the bowel. Next question...

If your cat already uses the litter box regularly, put the litter box over the toilet so the cat is accustomed to where he is suppose to go to the bathroom...after a while, remove the litter box...but drop the litter material as well as the hard litter material with the cat excrements inside the toilet...the cat will still think this is the litter box...this stage is kinda gross...'cause you basically have to spoon out the litter material because it will clog up the toilet if you try to flush it...after a while, you can just not put any litter material inside the toilet...and the cat will just go directly in the water...I have no idea how to teach it to flush though...sorry...

The way I've heard it should be done is to use a hair net and stretch it over the bowl with the seat down and sprinkle litter on it. It has to be a kitten in order to learn this technique. After a while when the kitten uses it regularly remove the hair net. The hair net teaches the kitten to balnce themsleves on the edge of the seat, I don't see where setting the litter box on the seat would do that though.

There's a very easy way -- just put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. :eek:

An aunt of mine did this with her cat. She put a screen on the toilet with a little litter, then later once the cat was used to using the toilet, she removed the screen. The cat used the toilet for all of his 22 years. The important thing is to start when they are kittens, and make it easy for them to access to the toilet.

Another really good idea is to put the kitten in a harness daily. This is done so the cat can travel in a car and be taken for walks.

To those who espouse cruelty, have you always been fond of cruelty to animals or did you come to it in your later years.

There's a clear plastic toilet seat shaped cover (available online or at pet stores) that you add litter to. It starts out as a complete cover, then over time, as the cat becomes more comfortable with the "concept" you cut out concentric holes to make the opening larger, until all that's left of the cover is the part that covers the toilet seat. This system only works well if you have a second toilet to train the cat with, otherwise it's a pain to have to lift the plastic cover with litter in it for humans to use the toilet.

Sometimes you don't even have to teach them, they pick it up themselves. A friend of mine got kicked out by his roommate because he failed to flush all the time. He denied it, and guess what -- it was the CAT, peeing without flushing (bad kitty!). Problem persisted, of course, after poor Greg got tossed out (the parrot hated him, too), finally the cat got caught in the act.

No, I tried using pepper powder, didnt work. Theres this cat repellant, didnt work. White vinegar? wasnt about to put that on my car. So, no i have no clue. But what really gives me the red a$$ is the cat owners always deny and get pissy when I tell them about the scratches.
