Hello El Capitan

I leave tomorrow for my long awaited sabbatical. I will once more attempt to climb El Capitan. I'll be gone for a week so y'all be good while I'm away! No work, no email, no phones....just me and the rock.

I was just wondering if any of you here have done this?

wow, not personally- but had a few former customers make a bid years ago. They ended up not doing it because the one idiot left his entire climbing rack at the airport in a forgotton bag. duh- thousands of dollars of pro. and he forgot it. I never climbed with them!
I read about somebody free-climbing it once- you aren't into that silliness are you? I'd be about good for 3-4 pitches/day, then portaledge for a day to rest, then repeat. I'm sure I could be lapped by most climbers. I was always more interested in mountaineering than rocks though- sort of like racing horses or cars I guess- same basic idea, different feel.

You going to climb the nose route? supposed to be one of the best climbs in the world!

GOOD LUCK!!
Kevin

That's a big rock. I spent a great deal of time free climbing when I lived in Colorado. My all-time favorite climb is the Bastille in Eldorado Springs Canyon, CO. Good luck and stay safe!

Wasn't that where a bunch of BASE jumpers got together to protest the park service not letting them jump off the mountain and to prove how safe BASE jumping was and the woman went splat while her husband filmed the whole thing?

It's sssaaaaaaaaaafffffeeeee, THUD.

I've never climbed something like that!

I'm doing Old Rag Mountain in Virginia's Shenendoa Valley next weekend:

On July 10th, we're doing White Oak Canyon. Eleven miles and four waterfalls.

Here's one:

I'm back.

33 hours 46 minutes later along with two crushed fingers and a big scratch on my right leg, I made it to the top of El Capitan.

Going up was not hard. The coming down part and the wind was the toughie.

I'll never win a beautiful hands contest after this.
Next year I might try Half Dome.

And by the way ...To all my Fresno friends.......I ate at the IN AND OUT in Fresno and I saw the Pick and Pull on Jensen Ave. and I thought about you dieselheads. I did not stop of course but we don't have any of those places in NC.

I'm not a climber but I read the book "El Capitan". I don't suppose that counts, huh?

Congratulations.
