Any VW Westfalia owners on-board?

My wife and I are thinking about buying a used mid 80's VW Westfalia.

Anyone have/had one? Anything I should watch out for?

I had a '70. Totally different animal but... I have friends who had one. I don't know if they made a diesel or not but the gassers couldn't beat a pack mule up a grade. If you're lucky you'll get 18mpg on the flats. Probably less hauling groceries.

Edit: 13.8l/100k? Is that about right?

I've owned a couple of Westies, as well as quite a few Bus/Vanagon combis. I highly recommend the late '80's ('86 <), which have the upgraded 2.1 litre engine, and typically have more niceties like cruise, AC, power windows/mirrors/locks etc.

Watch out for the leaky head gasket syndrome every 100k, as these typically require head replacement due to corrosion around the sealing surfaces. Other than that big one, they're actually quite stout, and drive and handle exceptionally well for such a big box on wheels.

You could always re-power with a nice tdi engine too!

I use to own a 1961 Westy (pre pop top) Unfotunately it was built a little different than the model your currenty in the market for. I did however enjoy it ! Good luck
