With all the talk of Mercedes' poor quality, I thought you would enjoy this.

In today's paper, there was a small announcement of "Engine Problems Behind BMW Recall."

"Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the world's second-biggest maker of luxury cars, is recalling 4,000 cars worldwide that may have faulty V-8 or V-12 gasonline engines. The affected models are 5-, 6-, and 7-Series and X5 sport utility vehicles, the company said. The engines may shut down, causing failures of power steering and brake assistance. The recall applies to vehicles registered between May 13 and July 12, and affects about 1,000 cars in Germany and 2,000 in the United States, Munich based BMW said. It blamed "a temporary production fault of a supplier" for the defect. BMW asked the owners not to drive the cars until the problem can be fixed at a BMW dealer. There have been no injuries related to the defect."

4000 cars? That's not a very big recall...but at least they admit to a problem...

...unlike the more prevalent self-destruct harmonic balancer issue that MB is still in denial about...

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely adore MB, and scoff at most of what BMW does. But, 4k cars is a pittance. MBs recall of 680k units for brake failures was a huge blow.

DaimlerChrysler AG's Mercedes Benz unit is recalling around 680,000 passenger cars worldwide due to suspected problems with the braking systems.

The company said it is offering free inspections to customers of its E-class sedan built after March 2002, SL-class sports cars built after October 2001 and T-models built after March 2003.

A spokesman said that prior inspections showed that of all the models of these classes and years, roughly two out of every thousand proved to have problems with the Sensotronic Brake Control system.

If the same percentage applied, this would translate in this case to about 1,360 units affected out of the 680,000 vehicles.

The carmaker said the defect in the system's braking hydraulics meant drivers need to brake earlier and with greater force to bring the car to a stop.

According to the company, high-mileage vehicles where the brakes have been used more than average -- such as taxis -- have mainly been hit by the problem.

Yep, this would actually make me lean towards buying a BMW.

Reminds me that a mechanic recently commented to me that it was interesting that BMW always seems to have trouble with their V8s, and no trouble with their sixes, and that Mercedes was just the opposite (topic was 104 head gaskets/wiring harnesses). They both seem to have trouble with their V-12s.

Dont forget about the wire harnesses in 1995 and earlier Mercedes. Manufacturer error in material equals denial on the part of Mercedes. Is it me or could the wire harness shorting out cause the engine to shut down too?

BMW also stepped up to recall their earlier 3.0 and 4.0 V8 engines which were flawed, by replacing them with new ones.

BMW wasn't exactly taking responsibility for their 2002 defective M3 engines, if it wasn't for disgruntled owners posting on the web, BMW would still be erroneously accusing owners of over-revving their engines.

BMW should be sending appologies to all it's five series owners about how awful their car looks compared to the Mercedes E-class.
