Dr. Watson - keep it?

What is Dr. Watson and why do I need it in Win XP pro? Does it fix problems or just log problems? Every so often my PC will be idle but the hard drive will spin and click like it's going out of style. This happens even when the PC is not connected to a network. The only change I notice when the HD frenzy is over is that there will be a ~5GB Dr. Watson log file. Like I'm going to read it. The PC is fine otherwise but it makes HD back-ups a bear because of the huge log file(s). Can I disable Dr. Watson on XP like ms.com says can be done in NT and 2000? What am I giving up by disabling Dr. Watson?

Thanks,
Sixto
