Question Dell Laptop-Can't play a movie "DVD Region Error"?

My brother bought new laptops for 3 of our salespeople and me, Dell Vostro 1500. They just came in and I've been playing with it a little bit. Nothing spectacular, 15.4" screen, wifi card, Core 2 Duo, reverse upgrade to XP , blah blah blah. The thing is big, especially after seeing the Mac Air! As a small business, screen size and price were heavily factored into the decision.

We don't have a need for any major graphics work or anything that requires a butt load of memory or speed. We're pretty much just using them to design fertilization and herbicide/fungicide/insecticide IPM programs for golf courses. Most of which are just Excel based but some are online. The screens are big enough so that you can plop it down on the superintendents desk and it's easy to see everything.

That said, entertainment while travelling is an important side-benefit. I've got a flight tomorrow to Orlando that a movie will make pass quite nicely. I've popped in two movies and both of them give me a "DVD Region Error-Unable to play this DVD because it does not match the region code of your disc player." The region currently supported by this disc is USA/Canada and doesn't even give you any other choices, although there is an option to change it. The movies, Blazing Saddles and Anchorman, are both brand new, factory wrapped not some back alley pirate copy.

What do I need to do to get them to work?

On my Sony with Windows NP

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

3. In the list of devices, double-click DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the DVD drive for which you want to change region settings, and then click Properties.

4. On the DVD Region tab, make the desired changes

Beats the hell out of me. I didn't change a thing but it decided that it would start working on its own. At least the flight will go a little quicker now!

I get in tomorrow night at 7:00 and leave Friday morning at 11:00. Wednesday I've got a co-op meeting at the Embassy Suites from 8-5 and a reception (read free beer ) from 6-8.

Thursday from 8-6 will be spent wandering the floor of the convention center (Golf Industry Show) meeting with suppliers.

I'll have at least one dinner with our grass seed supplier, most likely Thurs. If you've got time to kill for breakfast, lunch or an evening you should give me a holler. My boss and salespeople will be down there through Sunday, but it's in my best marital interest to get back home as soon as my work obligations are met! Otherwise I would have spent a couple more days down there and had more free time.

I have that exact model at home, with XP. I'll check to see if we have the same problem.

That sucks. There are a lot of holes in my schedule, though. CYPM just in case.
