Question Another Strut and Spring question.

Hi,

I have a w124 coupe lowered with H&R springs but coupled with factory struts. Im not sure whether to purchase Bilstein Sport or Heavy Duty springs. What is suggested the suggested set-up? Will the Sports be too stiff?

thanks
a.e.b.

Sports are recommended, but HDs may be fine

Based on quite a few posts that included details from phone calls to Bilstein, I think it is safe to conclude that the Sports and Heavy Duty shocks are about the same stiffness. Bilstein designed and recommends the Sports for applications with lowering springs, so it is probably best to go with the Sports with your H&R springs. In fact, H&R springs with Bilstein Sport shocks seems to be one of the most common combinations for the W124.

In spite of all that I just said, I have the Heavy Duty shocks coupled with the Eibach lowering springs. I obviously didn’t listen to all the above. I made my choice to use the HD shocks with rather limited knowledge about the shocks and springs, but since that time I have read many more posts about the subject. I am very happy with my combination of Eibachs with HD shocks and everything seems fine to me, but I guess I should have gotten the Sports and I am curious about how my car would feel with the H&R springs.

My Eibach springs do not lower as much as H&Rs and I guess they are not quite as stiff as H&Rs, so the Heavy Duty shocks may be OK for me. I am also happy that my car is not too stiff, although a little more stiff might not really be a bad thing. I think you get accustomed to the firmer ride. Who knows, a little more stiff might be great after you have it for a while. I also prefer that HD shocks are not bright yellow, although color is not a good reason to purchase shocks. I just like the fact that my black springs and shocks don’t advertise my mods.

You feel you love them too much, or you are just too stupid to know any better.

I have neuspeed springs which are really the H&R Sprinfgs badged by neuspeed.

I have bilstein hd shocks, and the setups works nicely..

Of course I did it because my car was too low int he rear, and I used the hd shocks because they helped raise the car slightly more.

I am happy with the ride, and the height is better for me.

You should also look into the sportline suspension upgrade. check the diy tab at the top of the page for information. quite a few people have done that upgrade and really like how it rides and looks.

Alon
