Nitrous.....
Just an update, it's been a year and a half and 15-20 bottles thru my '99 CLK 320 and all is well. In fact it's faster off the juice that it used to be too (no explanation).
I just bumped it up from about a 100 shot to about 180. Now were talkin! Gunna be careful because that's a lot for that little motor, but 100 just wasn't cuttin it. So about 400hp altogether. Nice...... Anyone else runnin it? |

Well.....over the years, it has come to my notice that an owner having more power as the mileage increases is experiencing a conciderable loosening of the internal engine components, namely, the pistons......so, now you've bragged on it, it will soon explode !

I've ceen that too, not the pistons part, but the more power then it dies. My first car got more and more powerful the more I drove it. Noticably more power. Weird. It never blew-up tho.
This eng is still tight and runs perfect. If she blows I'll put in a Chevy 400. A new motor/trans, hi-po goodies and all the bs will still be cheaper than a new Benz motor, or the difference between this car and a 55AMG (which I still keep an eye out for). 350HP AMG + 200 nitrous........ Sweet....... |

This "more power" thing is not surprising. There was a mini-scandal in the auto magazines of the very early 70's, when supposedly "stock" big 3 hot rods were turning in phenomenal times. The supposedly "stock" engines had been balanced and blueprinted - but set up "loose" on all tolerances to absolutely minimize friction. Some magazine blew the whistle when a "brand new" car came in burning oil...

gmo442:
Does the motor have two intake systems? I've never actually seen a V12 Benz uc. I have one fogger nozzle about 3" or so in front of the throttle blade. Very simple setup. They say a safe rule of thumb is to not exceed 50% boost in power. So a 600 has ???HP? +50% would be sweet for sure. |

Please post your VIN so we can all avoid this car when you try to sell it.

Nitrous isn't nearly as "Engine Eating" as people make it out to be. You can blow an engine just as effectively with high compression or forced induction as you can with nitrous. The key is to make sure your mixture is correct in all power adding situations. Sure, adding more power will shorten the longevity of any engine but where's the fun in that!
gmo442 You don't need two seperate systems, just at least two nozzles.

My friends who used nitrous in small and big blocks said that engine failure with nitrous was always for the following two reasons:
1. Use of ridiculous amounts (like 175% of original engine power +) 2. Even very brief moments of insufficient fuel during boost. It doesn't take long apparently to hole or break something.

if something goes wrong while running nitrous it does so Very, Very quickly.
I'll never forget an article about a couple of guys who rented a neon for a day, took it to the strip and fed it more and mroe N02 until it more or less let go.. I think they finished the day up w/ 150+ shot. Jonathan

lkchris:
Ok, I promise I won't sell it to you. 300EVIL: Well said. I was bored with the 215hp it comes with. 400 is much more fun, if the car wasn't fun I'd get rid of it. Life's too short to drive a lame car uc. What I really need is a CLK55 w/ a blower or 250 nos shot. I keep my eyes peeled, but they're rare and too expensive imo. I figure w/ gas prices up maybe I'll see more for sale. Strife: 175%? damn, that would be a 375shot for me. hmmm, I'm about 85% now so I guess I need to drill out my jets again. Actually, I'm thinking of tuning it down to ~140hp because I know in my gut that a 180 is a bit much. I only use it for maybe 4 seconds at the most which I feel safe doing. My problem is one day I'l line up with a vette or something and not let up. I don't know what my pistons are made of or how thick they are, also not sure about the rod strength. If they're the same as the C32 then I'd feel much better, but I don't know. Anyone know if they're the same???? So far the spark plugs are holding up fine and they're the wrong choice for nitrous, if they start to go I'll be worried. Nitrous is dangerous though. About a month or so ago my nitrous solenoid got some crud in it and held it open after I used it. When I gave it a little gas it pinged like crazy, a light pinging, but every hole on every fire. I turned the bottle off with my remote opener and that was that. But if I had a loud car and didn't hear it, or wasn't paying attention or just plain stupid I could've burnt the motor in a few seconds. If I blew it would be "forced" to install a 400 Chevy w/ a 700R4 tranz. Now that would be sweet..... |
